I own a .270WSM and i see alot of post about the short mags leaving the shooting world in a few years, more or less fading out. And i was wandering if none of the others will the .270 short mag live on? Cause it just so happends to be my favorite go to rifle.

WinkEven if sales are so bad that ALL the short fats are discontinued, if you reload and stock up on brass you have no problem. cheersroger

CK,

Information I have seen indicates the .300 WSM and the .270 WSM will continue as factory cartridges, while the other "shorts" are headed the way of the dodo bird. The .325 WSM is getting some play too, it is really too early to tell if it has legs.

Since you have your rifle, just get your dies and spare brass now and you will be fine.

You will, sooner or later.
In the meantime, buy some brass and dies.
Don't get the nickel coated stuff.

Roll EyesWell if you don't reload and you don't think you will in the future, you still have some options;
  • Find some one in Georgia that will do that for you.
  • Send me the rifle and I will supply you periodic reports as to it's progress. I know you will recognize this as an all heart offer.
  • Trade it to someone for an 8x57 scout rifle which I just happen to have two of.

    Reload pard!*** moonroger

If one is a true rifle affectionato, It is hard to trust someone who does not reload....

Guys who buy their ammo at WalMart are the non reload types....

Trusting a guy who doesn't reload is like trusting a politician! ( well okay, not that bad, but close!)

(this is partially in jest ya know?).....

Once you reload, you could care less whether a cartridge is popular or not...YOu are not at someone else's mercy for ammo availability...

Quick trade it before you get attached to it. thumb

I am no 270 fan, but if you like the 277 bore, a nice light sporter in 270 Win WILL NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE...

Ok call me crazy but im 17 and that was my first centerfire rifle (i have a 30-06 now too) so it kinda has centimental value. But if i were to trade it i would definetly get a 7mm of some type to replace it. Its a savage stainless synthetic. But... can anyone say winchester model 70 shadow elite in a .270? or pro shadow in 7remmag?

OK its getting sold this weekend. New gun suggestions are open. Prefference to a stainless synthetic. Medium bore (leaning towards a .270win or 7mmremmag).Bolt action of course. And im a fan of winchester model 70s. But im not stuck on that either and can be swayed.

    Critter_Killer,

Unless your really want to sell the .270 WSM,
I wouldn't sell it based on the predictions of
the garbage you read on these internet forums.
The .270 WSM, and the .300 WSM are going
to be around well after you decide you are
too old to hunt, even at the tender age of 17
now. Of all of the short fat magnums, these
two will be "standards" and the WSM will
end up being a parent case for a bunch of
new wildcats. I am one of the old crusty
guys that love my .308 Win, .30-06 Sprg, and
all of the chamberings based on these two
"standard" cases, but I can clearly see the
most popular WSM chambering finding a
home in the list of standard chambering going
    forward. I have a .300 WSM, and I expect
I will pass, and the 270/300 WSM will still
have factory ammo available, in a decent
selection. I may have to buy another one,
just so my two sons don't have to fight over
    who gets the 300 WSM.

I do agree with the perspective that rifle guys
find those that do not hand load...Suspicious Big Grin
Although I think my wife thinks I am "suspicious", since she swears she hears
maniacal laughter coming from my loading
room, when I am pulling on the Rock Chucker.
I have definitely gone to the dark side! More
than half my enjoyment of shooting comes in
the loading room crafting obscenely accurate
    ammo.

Critter_Killer ----- You may be young but you will see the .270 WSM around when you are an old man, it is that good. A round that will send a 130 grain bullet 3400 fps and a 140 grain bullet 3300 fps and is not the super expensive like the Lazzroni's will earn a lot of respect in the coming years. Just my honest opinion. wave thumb Good shootig.

If you get a .308 and that belted ammo has tracers, throw them away. I wiped out a new 4 groove 03-a3 barrel firing a bunch of tracers.

Now if you have a 30-06 why would you want a .308? Cheap Military Ammo?

Like the man said ask Mom to get you loading gear instead of the rifle.

If your heart is set on another rifle think about a Mod 200 Stevens( great value in today's market) in perhaps 22-250 or .243. Later you can have new calibers by just swopping barrels.

Every Mod.200 Stevens I've seen in use is surprisingly accurate.

It is also my opinion that every rifle man or women should at least one Mauser Mod. 98 in 8mm to help burn up all that milsurplus ammo that is selling so reasonably (cheap) right now. When you shoot out that barrel you'll probably have a good job and can afford to build your first custom rifle on the action, or do it yourself. Cool

First get the reloading equipment. thumb thumbroger

CritterKiller, I think you're better off not even reading gun magazines. Seriously. The articles in there are of dubious value except as advertisements for whatever new fashion trend the gunmakers want you to buy into.

I would suggest not selling your guns unless you just really want to. Since your seventeen in a year or two you will have a lot more concerns besides what new rifle to get. I'd go hunting more myself.

If it works for you use it.The 270 wsm and 300 wsm will probally be the last two wsms standing. Its a trick of the trade for evey gun magazine to get us to buy new calibers.I fell prey to the 357 maxium in 1983 .One month it was the hotest new pistol around. Then two months later it was flame cutting pistols in half according to these same writers who talked me into getting it.Its funny now there is no factory ammo. The same can be said of the 45 winchester magunum and the 9 mm winchester magnum.I use to try to save up and buy as many of the brand new guns when I was in college and high school.I had 243s,3006,35 whelens ,a 458, a 375 jdj that I almost hate forming brass for,6.5 jap,250 sav,303 british,308 winchester,45-70s,a 222 remington,357 maxium,32 h& R mag,454,44 mag,41 mag,338 win mag,338-378 weatherby,300 mag,223 remington, and a few more.I sold all the ones that were collector items and the ones I didnt shoot.I kept the ones my parents gave me a 243,3006,30-30 and bought a few 338 win mags, two 338-378 weatherbys,a few 416 rem mags and a couple of 264 winchester mags.I have gotten weary of new cartridges to see if they even last 5 years. You will probally go through alot of guns in your life and hang on to some favorite ones.If you have one your parents gave you keep it forever.I sold the only gun that my mom ever bought me a 1100 remington light weight 20 ga.I have all the rest of the guns they ever bought me.I find myself hunting with fewer and fewer guns these days to make things easier.I use the same bullets in my 338 win mag and 338-378 weatherby.I reload for my 416 rem mag and 338-378 because I asm not paying $80-100 for a box of shells.I have 416 rem mag loads that are $20 a box with new brass.I just talked my brother into getting his son a 270 winchester instead of a 270 wsm because I didnt think at 12 he could handle the wsm recoil just yet and Ruger puts 22" barrels on 270 wsm.I went to the range where I buy used brass and the biggest pile of brass in the boxes was the 270 wsm.I think its even starting to beat out the 300wsm.I think those are the only two wsm that will reach their 25th birthdays.I hope that you have lots of fun with your guns and get lots of game and always shoot safely. Its what you make it in your rifle that counts. You can reload that 270wsm pretty cheaply. It should not cost but a few pennies more than a 270 winchester to reload. If you practice with your gun as much at possible at all the ranges which you expect to shoot you will be a better shooter.Always rember you wont have a bench rest out when your hunting also. You should try shooting sticks, bipods and a standing bench.i teach alot of kids to shoot .I always start with a 22 and work them up to bigger calibers. Its young hunters like you that are the future of hunting and shooting. I hope that you are able to shoot and hunt the rest of your life.If more kids were shooting targets and hunting less kids would be shooting kids.My father took me hunting from the age of 4 and fishing at 2.If you want to save hunting take a kid shooting and fishing.

Don't reload hell I,ve been reloading from the time I was 5 or so with help of course at the younger ages.

Find so old fart that has been doing it for more years then you been alive. They most likely tell you all you want to know and then some most have old equipment that they might give you to get started.

I haven't shot a head of big game with a factory round in well over 30 years.
