I picked the 340 because, #1 I reload and #2 I don't see anything that will compare to it in the caliber we are talking about. A drawback is that it is not available at every back country store but by reloading I circumvent this problem. I also feel very comfortable shooting the 340 either offhand or on the bench. It's my goto gun when there is a or could be problem animal and have never been disappointed.

When the .338 Win mag is readily available and in almost any manufacturer's guns, and has all the power needed to handle anything on the planet.....I really don't know the answer to this question.

I don't reload but otherwise RIGHT-ON some don't like the recoil but I don't mind it. Also I have a 15 year old nephew nearly 5' tall & 120 lbs. (he has Cystic Fiberosis) & this little shit loves to shoot mine.

A tip for you is to try .375 H&H Winchester Western brass. After sizing and fireforming you will gain more case capacity. The best thing is case abundance. I hope this answers your question.
I have always used the 338WM for all the obvious reasons with no complaints. Ever since I was a small boy I've always wanted a Weatherby and the 340 would be my calibre of choice. I've always liked the Mark V action, one of these days..............................

The only thing going against the .340wby is the rifles available & cost of ammo/brass. My buddy shoots a custom Sako in .340wby & it's a great rifle, accurate, hard hitting & flat shooting w/ 225gr bullets.

Steve, wife says I'll lose too much velocity. Ya know how women are about length... just consider some of the condemntaion of a 23" 340 here on AR recently.
Why pick the 340? Well it is just a boomer. The 338 Win. is one of my all time favorites but the Weatherby beats it by a couple hundred fps and that has been enough difference to make a lot of people move up to a bigger gun. I used a 340 for a couple of seasons in Alaska. With the 250 NP it really was a hammer. Out of all the 338 cartridges on the market now I would choose the Weatherby if I was having a rifle built.

You have to love a women like that. Steve

I am a huge fan of the .340 Wby, having shot one for years. In my opinion it is the .338 caliber chambering to shoot, if you want maximum speed at reasonable recoil and economy of reloading. I own and shoot the .338 Win mag, .338 Lapua and .340 Wby. My rifle is a cheap model Sporter Weatherby, with many dings and scratchs that give it a personality all it's own. I have taken many Deer, Elk and a Alaskan Yukon Moose with it. I mounted a 4 X 16 Signature Model Burris on it and the combination has served me well. With North Fork bullets of 225 and 240 grains, and Barnes XLC and TSX of 225 grains it is awesome. When the .338 Ultra mags came out I considered it, but when talking to a buddy who shoots one and comparing loads, I was using much less powder to achieve within 75 fps of what he was getting with hot loads and decided the payoff was not enough. Good shooting.

If it's a .33cal. I'll love it. To be honest though i've never shot the Weatherby round. I guess where I live my winmag is more than is needed, so I went one step smaller (case) again. Gotta love that WinMag though.
