In 1967 I was beginning high school. I saw an ad in my Dad’s American Rifleman for an American Rifleman binder. How cool is that? I could be the only one in my freshman class with an American Rifleman binder. I sent off $3.25 and a few weeks later got the binder in the mail. Only problem was it was made to hold magazines and was not a 3 ring binder. So I used it for its intended purpose and put all of the 1967 American Rifleman magazines in it.

My how things have changed

An annual membership to the NRA was $5, a life membership was $100.
Want a Ruger Mark 1? $41.50
RCBS Jr press $39.90
Kleins had a Deluxe Sporterized Enfield in 30-06 for $69.50 and if you sent them a check they would mail it to you.
Mauser Mod 98s were $39.50 for NRA Very Good
Gen Doolittle graced the front cover of the October issue

Seems like things never change

Quite a few articles about pending legislation to restrict our gun rights backed by the likes of Sen Robert Kennedy of NY and Sen Edw Kennedy of Mass
They were ultimately successful in passing the 1968 gun bill.

And to close out the year there was an article about tiger hunting in the Dec issue.

In 1975 I brought an AR magazine to physics class (9th grade). They had a formula to calculate the recoil of a rifle. I thought the teacher was gonna kill me with his stare. This was in NYC.

I went to high school from 80 - 84 and we used to leave guns in the gunracks without a problem. I even brought in a rifle for a public speaking class without any trouble.

After all it was NYC. Didn't have such trouble in rural Wis. then. We even had real guns in school.

I stocked my first rifle in industrial arts class in 1962...my model 70 was kept in my locker while I whittled and sanded the (Herter's bought) stock. It was a .270 and no one batted an eye over it.

I went to a suburban HS in the early to mid60's. My Sr year I kept a shotgun in the car (when I could take the car to school). Took my hunting vest in and hung in my locker. As I was leaving school the ass't principal pulled me aside and ask me not to bring it in with game in the back. He was worried I would leave ducks over the weekend and cause a Monday disaster. Many of us refinished gunstocks in shop class. Rule was we had to meet shop teacher outside and demonstrate our weapon was unloaded. Back then you got your ass busted with an ash paddle if you screwed up. Very few discipline problems back then!

Thru the NRA I purchased 1903 Springfield rifles for $14.50 and Colt 1911s at $7.50 with my membership..Everyone did right after WW11, until some years later and the liberals took a crap on that just like they do everything that does not fit THEIR agenda..Its called "freedom" in small small letters.

Yeah Ray,
Sure wish I had a thousand dollars to spend back then. Of course it didn't happen because I think I was getting $1.00 per hour for hauling hay. barf

A dollar an hour would have been big money back then for this kid, I was getting $2.00 a day herding goats in the high desert mountains of the Big Bend in Texas, the second summer the gave me a mule to ride because they felt so bad about me walking 10 to 15 miles a day behind the goats..It soon dawned on me the mule had never had a saddle on his back, oh well it worked out that I got him broke to ride, but I didn't get a raise..I think i'm wishing I was in Calif. back then! jumping

Got out of the service in "57" and shortly after purchased an 03-A3 "factory reject" for $15.00. It came with the only case it had fired. It was test fired and rejected as it would not eject. The ejector blade was missing. shocker 03-A3, 4 groove, pistol grip flawless black walnut stock. clap A nickle replaced the missing part . Being young and dumb I turned it into a custom sporter. My stock making came about form buying and then selling those NRA cheap 1903 Springfields that a real American government of real men allowed to be sold to replenish the Gov. coffers..Imagine that!

The Springfield bolt action 30-06 was as good a rifle as was ever built..Some were brittle, but the NRa published the ser. numbers of the good ones and the bad ones..I still have that information.
