I have tried to find something about this theough searchand have failed, so I felt I would call on the knowledgeable peope here at AR to help me. my 300 winnie, in a Ruger 77 with a leupy 3-9 VX-II really likes the now dicontinued Federal High Energy loading of the 200 gr Nosler Partition. Published ballistics and trajectory are as follows: 2930 MV, +1.6 at 100, -6.9 at 300. My question is where do I need to sight my rifle in at 100 to maximize my long range trajectory without shooting to high at closer ranges. I am very comfortable with this rifle at all ranges, but most longer range shooting is a "sighter" to see where it hits and then adjust. I have kept it about 2 " high at 100 and left it there, knowing out to 300 I am safe, and that I am sure is good for 99% of huntng, but I am a tinkerer and always gotta fiddle with stuff... LOL

Brent You can play with the numbers with this ballistics program. If you enter a short increment, such as 10 yards, it should tell you exactly what you want. Always verify by actually shooting though. Ray http://www.eskimo.com/~jbm/ballistics/traj_basic/traj_basic.html Arizona Mountains

Zeroed at 250(+2.6" at 100) and you should be good to ~300 with a 6" target zone. Zeroed at 280(+3.3" at 100) with an 8" target zone and you should be good to ~330. That's using published velocity and BC numbers so not necessarily accurate but should get you close. You can verify things when you shoot it and adjust accordingly.

Brent it really depends on what you are going to be shooting. For coyotes I sight in 1" high at a 100. For deer I sight in 2" to 3" high at a 100 depending upon the terrain and types of shots I anticipate. For elk I sight in 3" and even as high as 4" at times at 100 again depending on the country and anticipated shots. The reason for the difference is just what I can get away with and still keep it in the different sized kill zones. (When I was a kid my father used to tell me that God hated a coward, I finally realized he has even less use for a fool.)

Thanks for your help everyone! That website is alot of fun to mess with Cheechako! This weekend I will be able to do some long range shooting, out to 3-400 yds so I will be able to verify. Thanks again!

The short answer for 300win, If your going to have most shots at 300yds sight in in for 300 yds. Then take it out and shoot it. Why the 200gr? the 180gr is a better 300 win load for Elk for deer, I drop down to 165/168. The 300 is short enough, you waste it's potional, by going that heavy. If your're going to be shooting beyond 300yds, you should start reloading, so you can get hte trigger time required. Depending if you have a 32mm,40mm or 50mm scope, you'll hit different. If you have a 24" vs a 26"or 28" barrel, you'll hit different. Fast barrel vs slow barrel, ect. The computer'll only get you on paper. Trigger time is the answer, to your question. I personally, sight mine 2" high at 200 yds. That'll keep you within deer out to 350yds, then hold into the hair out to 450yds, at 550yds hold 4plex post (at 9X), where you want to hit, at 600 yds 4plex 8X), 650yds 4plex(6X), 700 yds 4plex(3X). You of course, have to shoot yours to come up with your own, each gun will vary. I shoot box of shell for each of mine(X5) every week, range only has 400 yds targets, so I go once a month to where I can shoot long range 800 yds. RC

Brent: Ran your numbers thru my copy of QuickTarget which comes with Quickload. According to it and assuming trajectory is never moer than +/- 3.0", here is what I came up with: PBR Zero = 255 yds. Impact @ 100 yds. = +2.5" Impact @ 200 yds. = +2.3" Impact @ 300 yds. = -3.2" The bullet will strike +3.0" @ 150 yds. Hope this helps some.
