A few years ago my brother bought a Marlin bolt action .270 rifle. I have not seen another nor do I see it listed on Marlins website or in any of their information any more. Does anybody have any information on this and if they stopped making it, and why? His rifle seems to be a good shooter for a hunting rifle. Thanks for any info.

teele1, from what I understand it hasn't been in production for a few years now. I believe slow sales were the reason, hardly surprising given the amount of competition in bolt actions. Too bad, it had excellent features and could have been one of the better rifles given enough time.

Welcome to AR.
two things that I remember are, they retailed for the same or more than a M700 BDL and the stock seemed to be a little large through the grip and the forearm. They did seem to have a good list of features. Probably as good as a 700 as far as fit and finish.
Here I go turn'in my 2 cents into 3 cents again. [Wink]

Marlin listed it in their catalogue for a year or 2, then they started dropping thigs, first the BAs, then the camp carbs., etc.

I think the biggest problem was the stiff competition between the new M70 Post 94 Winchesters and the Rem 700s.

Marlin built a bunch of features into it that were direct copies of other factory bolt actions. Safety was M70 winchester, bolt and breeching just like a 700 remington and the magazine was a hinged floorplate with a detachable magazine just like a browning A-bolt. Unfortunately, it was a bit too much like the browning and I believe they got sued by them for it. Marlin also had the misfortune of bringing it out at about the same time winchester released their new CRF "classic" actions and it overshadowed marlin's rifle. A mass produced CRF rifle was now available and the marlin was push feed just like a gazillion others out there. If marlin had done their homework a bit better and copied the M98 mauser breeching instead of the remington then they'd probably have been a success. What you have with one is a reasonably well made rifle with a remington action, a M70 safety, and an A-bolt magazine in a somewhat clunky stock. Not a bad rifle but not enough to set the world on fire.
