Are they any good? I think they are a Hawkeye African Barrel band swivel. Pretty trim and handy. Saw one for sale used unfired what is a good price? How hard to find ammo without reloading?

Thanks

Ok they wanted more at Cabelas. They did not carry the ammo there. $600 would be a good deal

Folks who own these tend to not want to part with them. I think $800 to $1000 is the going price.

I own two of these Ruger Africans in 9.3x62 and I simply love them, (as well as my 375s), due to their light weight and slim stocks. I paid $900 and $957 for them. I believe now that they are discontinued, the $800-1000 price range is closer to reality today than when they were still available.

I like the 9.3 x 62 but would also direct you toward the 375 Ruger. I went to the range this morning with the 375 and averaged 2940 fps with 250 gr ttsx and 81 gr of IMR 4451. Just started using this powder and am pleased with the initial results.

I believe my chrony was being very generous on the velocity side but the groups were fantastic and the brass was perfect. I cannot find any negative on the 375 Ruger and CDNN is trying to liquidate them. It is a 23" barrel and I put a Hogue stock with aluminum bedding block on it. Great gun no matter which caliber you choose.

I admit you get 1 more in the magazine with the 9.3 but I am so shocked at how well the 375 is performing that I have made it my go to gun for everything.....hunting or just paper punching. Either way you should be pleased with your purchase. BTW my rifle was $699 new in stainless....great deal IMO.

the only Rugers that I've owned that I was happy with was a few single action revolvers....they all needed a trigger job but they were good guns....all the rest ....well...let someone else buy them.....

For the US, either the 9.3 or the 375 would work great. For Africa, I would recommend the 375Ruger as being legal in more places.

The 375Ruger can also be handloaded to 5000 ftlbs. See AmmoGuide and Real Guns.

Well since I have 2 .375 H+H it isn't to replace them. It's just cause its kinda a neat caliber and I was surprised at how handy the thing was compared to the huge bulk of the regular magnum ruger next to it. I thought it would be a good "girl" rifle LOL

The one I saw was closer to $900 that's why I asked. Yeah the RSM magnums are big. They have one too. Like my M70's better. The wife might need one though.......

I got a right handed African model in stainless steel. 23" barrel with grey laminate stock. They may be sold out of them now. I will be raked over a bed of coals for saying this.....but I enjoy shooting the Ruger as much as my Sauer 202 Deluxe. Obviously the quality and finish are not equal but the 375 Ruger makes me keep going back to it. In my defense I only really enjoy big bores......it's a sickness.

The Ruger M77 Hawkeye is one of my favorite rifles. I would not trade my 358 Win for anything out there. When I was in the market for a 9.3x62 I waited for a long time for the release of the Ruger African but I settled for a CZ American 550 w/Kevlar stock. I have grown to really like this rifle. Mine is bone stock and it works for my needs but, I'm told that with a bit of tweaking, it can be even better.

I like my CZ 550 safari magnum in 416 Rigby but......The action was very rough and it took a good bit of work to smooth it out. My Ruger and Winchester on the other hand were very slick right out of the box. No matter which brand you buy they will all have factory quirks or shortcomings. With the Ruger African I had to swap out the stock. I just did not like the fit. My Winchester in 416 Remington had a too light firing pin spring and I went with a Tubb's speedlock firing pin and spring.

If you want to make a CZ right then send it to Wayne at AHR. He can also work wonders on a Winchester or Ruger. Of course this steps into the realm of custom guns. For factory price, components and warranty you just cannot beat a Ruger Hawkeye IMO. Throw a Nikon Monarch 3 scope on it and you have a gun with a lifetime guarantee that will perform very well.

I think the plus or minus $900 range is about right as that is what I have seen (plus actually).

I talked to the Ruger folks at Dallas Safari Club and suggested they do another run. I also told them they should make some Hawkeye Africans without the muzzle brake. I suspect with one vote in each category they won't change their business plan.

Wayne at AHR put together a similar rifle for my daughter in 9.3, using a new Ruger M77 MkII action he had barreled and a factory stock. It came out quite nice and just right for her.

If I was starting out all over again and was going to buy my first and only rifle it would be a Ruger stainless MKII syt stock in my favorite caliber 270 or bigger.

It would last several life times and then some.

IMO, the Ruger 77 Hawkeye African model is the finest rifle to come out since the pre 64 Win. and it comes in 9.3x62...The stocks have been slimmed down considerably, it has shallow V rear iron sight, and barrel band front sight, barrel band swivel, mod. 70 type wing safety, just about all one could ask for in a factory rifle. I paid $900 NIB, for the two that I had.
