"The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." -Thomas Jefferson Heard a brash comedian comment on this the other day: "Ya, this argument worked when both we and the government had muskets. Now the government has cruise missiles and napalm. When Janet Reno wants to go in, she goes in."

This is true. And I think one of the liberal left's primary underlying reasons for being entirely against so called "assault rifles" or any "black" rifle. I also think the leftist know that if the S--t hit the fan, the military would sit on the sidelines. After all they make it clear through there anti absentee vote counting efforts throughout the nation that they are aware that the military is largely more conservative. Can you imagine a fighter pilot dropping napalm on US citizens? Or a platoon of Abrams or Bradleys - driven by soldiers, not "police" - moving in one East Bumfuck? So, an underlying goal is to limit the ability of the "people" to mount a successful campaign against the quasi-military "police" units like SWAT teams or the FBI's similar units, etc. Most chiefs of police throughout the US are liberals, as are the police unions leaderships. Don't forget that the leftist really do think that guns and god are the root of evil and anyone who values either is dangerous and isn't right in the head. JPK Free 500grains

I agree, if it came to an armed conflict, the rank and file military along with the vast majority of the officer corp, is going to concentrate on defending our shores against another country trying to take advantage of the situation. They will sit on the sidelines and let citizens fight the politico's goons. Janet being a good example of a goon, check out her record in Miami years ago. So, I would argue that the quote from Jefferson is as valid today as it was when he first spoke. SIC TRANSIT GLORIA MUNDI

Napalm is no longer used as it has been reclassified as a "chemical weapon" by international treaty Killing insurgents with cruise missles simply doesn't work and only creates more insurgents. If cruise missiles were effective Osama Bin Laden would have been dead when Clinton attempted to take him out and 9/11 would have never happened. Humor isn't reality. If memory serves, the taliban were giving the Russian invaders a pretty rough time, even before we helped them out with stings to couter the Russky choppers. There's one hell of a lot of gun owners and is surprising what a determined groups of guerrilla fighter can do. Check out An American Guerilla in the Philipinnes by Ira Wolfort. Interesting book BTW. Now imagine what an airforce pilot might do with an armed aircraft if he was ordered to attack a domestic civilian target... No, high teck weapons aren't irrelevant, but AD If I provoke you into thinking then I've done my good deed for the day! i often wonder what kind of a "war" we would have right here if things got bad enough for the "average joe" to pick up his deer rifle. i don't know anyone who doesn't have a couple and a decent batch of ammo at hnd at all times. i never read the book, but i did see the movie, " an american guerilla in the philipenes" way back when a i was a youngster, probably about 10 or 12, if that old. my dad was working at a theater remodeling it in downtown milwaukee, when it came out. i remember him saying, " we have to go see this movie". as long ago as it was, i still remember allot of it and still judge allot of "war type movies" against it. it was that good.

I don't think the "average Joe" will ever pick up his deer rifle to defend himself against the government, it just won't happen! 99.9999% of the gun owners will just hand them over or at best try to hide them. No armed conflict to speak of, this is for previously law abiding citizens of course. Criminals won't hesitate to break the law . Rifles and IEDs seem to still be causing some problems in Iraq and Afghanistan.
