nice rifles. dont think there worth the price!
look them over, there was, is, some condition problems new out of the box. one I saw the bolt on the extraction end looked like it had been ground on a course grinding wheel. another had a ridge running down the barrel channel rusty looking oil leached out of the safty end. I would look it over good and remove the action from the stock if its allowed.

In other words, they are the same quality as the old Winchesters which was pretty crappy.

I'd reserve judgement until I saw one myself.

I bought one of the new featherweights in .270 a couple months ago and I'm very happy with it,

I haven't seen any of the Super grades however.

As to price.....One can buy a couple decent used Remningtons for the same price......In the classifieds the asking price for a used classic is about what I paid for my "carolina made" Winchester......about $800 delivered with tax!

Don't know about the new 70's, but owned 6 in various calibers and none of them came up to the hype given by the gun writers, including o'conner. There was always something wrong and it was quality control. the new 70's will not match most of the guns already on the market, unless the new management understands QUALITY.

I examined two a couple of months ago and was very impressed with everything about them. They were .270 Win and 30-06. The actions were buttery smooth. I am waiting for the SS All Weather in .270 WSM to go with my Ultimate Shadow in the same chambering. My son and grandsons have not been able to get the Shadow out of my hands, the speeds and accuracy of that sucker are awesome. Good shooting.

vapodog ----- Thanks for the heads-up on the Super Grade. I have been waiting for the All
Weather Stainless in .270 WSM, but now I might think again and go for the Super Grade. I already shoot the WSM in the Ultimate Shadow from New Haven which is lightweight and shoots lights out. The Super Grade I notice is 8 Lbs and looks georgeous. Good shooting.

i finally got around to calling the winchester folks, though i got their "browning" office. this is what they told me about the super grades:

1. they have assembled some, but haven't shipped any and won't start until sometime this summer.

2. they will have a 1 piece floorplate

3. they will be bedded at the lug and rear tang

4. they will have fancy wood, which they told me was 2 grades above what they are putting on the current featherweights

5. the barrel is free floated

6. i asked how the stock was sealed beneath the barrel and around the action and the man said he didn't know those specifics

7. i asked about the current floorplate which has an inscription on it. the man said some of the sg's will have that, but they were ceasing the inscription in jan 09'

that's all i got from the win people.

i spoke to a gunsmith at a local gander mountain and he said the bought the first one that hit his store and it was extremely accurate (a 270 win featherweight) with hornady ammo.

i'll call them again in a month or so and ask the same questions. we'll see what they say then.
