Send pics of your sporterized mausers. I've got an ugly Chilean 7X57 that I'm considering making over. Need some visual ideas.

If it's a 1935 Oberndorf Chilean, I would use the action to make a traditional English-style open sight sporting rifle, along the lines of a Rigby or H&H magazine rifle. Don't bugger that pristine action by drilling holes!

Ok, this may not be what you're looking for but it's an 1891 Argentine Mauser with the original stock carved and checkered, peep sight added, consistantly shoots light handloads into .8".

Here's a '98 Mauser when it was in process, ulltralight stainless barrel in 7x64.

It isn't "buggered" if the holes do what the owners wants it to do.

I just don't get how some can claim what should or should not be done with other people's property.....

Yep, he, you & I can all do what we damn well please. He asked for ideas and I offered my opinion. If someone wants to fuck up a scarce valuable Oberndorf better suited for something else that can be their business but it isn't mine.

Damn, HP. If you want to flame an asshole step to the bathroom mirror. Or start with me. fla3006 was asked a straight-up question and gave a straight-up answer.

Bob,

That's some good looking wood you have your rifle. How many hill country deer has that rifle connected with?

If you read the poster's question, he wanted visual ideas of what to do. Most people responded with just that, pictures.

I don't think we wanted editorializing about his choice of action because he never said "what do you think about my choice of action".

I don't call that a straight-up answer. Some people, however, have their ideas of what should be left alone and can't help themselves from telling those who do not ask about it.

But, I'm sure I'm the asshole because I'm not some gunsmith or collector with thousands of posts here since the forum opened.

No, you made a false assumption about one of the nicest guys I've met in a while. Had nothin' to do with anything else.

And if the guy doesn't have a picture to post ot the rifles he describes he isn't excluded from the conversation. Trying to style a rifle near the period that the action was made in not an unreasonable suggestion even if Jason disagrees in the end.

Tex 21,

Well, if you let me count west Texas deer in with the Hill Country deer, six since it has been finished. Only two of those were in the Hill Country. It has taken a few hogs too.

Good Hunting,

Bob

Thanks to all that sent the visual ideas that I requested. Now I can imagine that my can possibly look like a more traditional hunting rifle. You guys have some nice weapons.

Here's an idea of Forrest meant about un-drilled style. Granted they're not for everyone but they are pretty.

Thanks Harry, those rifles are beautiful, and yes I'm partial to traditional pre-war Mauser styling which isn't necessarily everyone's cup of tea, especially if one wants to mount a scope. Here's a Brevex magnum styled the way I like:

The reason I personally would not drill an Oberndorf banner Mauser is because they are getting expensive and hard to find for custom projects which seek to replicate the characteristics of high-grade pre-war open-sight English & Continental sporters originally built on Oberndorf 98 actions. But to each his own.

Double set triggers, very nice. A crying shame they are not seen as much these days.

ALF: none of the latter rifles shown are if fact "sporterized" Mauser rifles....What they are, are in fact customs built on Milsurp actions

Not even BrowningGuy's 91 Arg?
Well, in this case, if Jason's rifle is indeed a 1935 Chilean carbine, I would not "sporterize" it at all, they are accurate & handy just the way they are, I have one in a scabbard on the side of my tractor.

FLA3006,
Not really sure what I have, This is what is stamped on the reciever.

MAUSER CHILENO MODELO 1895
DEUTSCHE WAFFEN-UNO MUNITIONSFABRIKEN
BERLIN

Other than that, it has acrest on the top front of reciever. The crest has a single star in the center.

The local surplus guy puts it at about $100.

Jason, you have exactly what you described, a 95 Chilean military contract Mauser made by DWM in Berlin, worth about what your guy said. 98 Mausers are typically what most gunsmiths use when customizing Mausers.

FLA3006,
Thanks, I knew it wasn't much. It was a gift from my mother a few years back. The damned thing "was" near 5 ft. long and sat in the closet the entire time I've had it. I like the 7x57 as a caliber, but didn't wanna lug a 20 pound gun around. So being a hobbyist,I've decided to hack away and see what I can come up with.
