I would appreciate some opinions. I have long wanted an original .275 Rigby. I was today shown a Holland & Holland made .275 H&H Magnum, takedown rifle with its original case. The serial no. is 28008. I have not checked it out yet, but I expect the rifle is from the '20's. It appears to be complete and in excellent shape. I know little about this cartridge except that it is very close to a 7mm Rem. Magnum. Does anyone have any experience with it. The price is $7500. It is a beautiful gun.

I am not an expert on British guns, but, I have owned a couple and seen, shot and handled quite a few. When I was young, they were quite common here in British Columbia, but, have largely been bought up by Americans during the past 40 yrs.

That particular cartridge is currently loaded and is about equal to a hot .280 Rem.; it is simple to form from any H&H based case, my choice would be Winchester 300 H&H brass.

If, in ORIGINAL condition with 85% or better finish, that is a fair price for the rifle and is the sort of buy that we all want to find. It sounds like you have found a gem, the last H&H takedown I saw was bought by an African professional hunter who lives here in the off season. It's a .375 in very good, not mint shape and he paid $8000.00 several years ago. Hope this helps.

If it is an original H&H rifle, the bore size is likely .287", not .284". Bullet selection is limited to Woodleigh and Hawk, at least all that I could find.

Given that, though, if given the chance, I'd own one in a heartbeat. The 275 H&H was the second of Belted Rimless "magnum" cartridges that H&H developed. It was developed in 1911 or 12, and is basically a shortened 375 H&H case with a steeper shoulder. I do have the specs for it and can email those to you on Monday. Factory ballistics were 160 grain bullet at 2800 fps. I believe that has been upgraded with newer powders to around 3000 fps now.

From left to right:
7x57, 7mm Rem Mag, 275 H&H, 300 H&H

A friend has a 275 H&H in an old M70. I was led to believe that it has an orginal Winchester barrel. He has used it as a long range deer rifle.

Even if it is a .287", that does not mean that one cannot use .284" bullets with reasonable accuracy. The small group here (bottom right) was shot with .308" bullets in a .311" bore.
