Much as I like my 7mmMag, which incidentially I bought to replace my 25-06*, in this case I'd suggest the 300WinMag. Don't overlook the lighter recoil of 165's launched fast in the 300WinMag. * on getting my 7mm to replace a 25-06 I got tired of everyone saying that a 120gr bullet is necissary to kill deer with a 25-06 (not hardly) but the 7mmMag will toss 120gr 7mm bullets at speeds 25-06 owners and even 257Wby owners wish they could launch 100gr bullets and I thought that was just the ticket for "diagonally across the cornfield" whitetails or across the sage-flat for Speed goats I don't believe in loading 160gr or 175gr bullets in a 7mmMag for Elk, that's what a 338mag is for. If I provoke you into thinking then I've done my good deed for the day! And your 340 will work great on elk, should the need arise. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

I thought about the 7mm rem mag, and decided on the 300 win mag, I felt it was more flexible.

I voted for the 7mm Rem Mag, but toss a coin. My 7RM works great on elk with 175gr Partitions. I also have a 6.5 Swede and a .375 H&H (and a couple of 30-06s). BH1 There are no flies on 6.5s!
