Anybody have the inside scoop on upcoming avaiability? I've been noticing that the gun scribes have been touting this "neglected, misunderstood, etc." caliber, plus, I just bought another (!) .358 rifle...but I don't reload and won't be reloading...Ugghhh

they laughed at it when it first come out. I guess gun writers figured out you could just get within 300 yds of a game animal before shooting it. I'm no help when it comes to the factory ammo question, I don't even use jacketed bullets in my 358's so I couldn't tell you about the availability of buying bullets to reload with.

In the US you have custom reloaders who can do it for a good price. I used to use 225 gr Sierra GK in my 358Win before I sold it. Great results on big red deer with 20" barrel. You could also use 200 gr Barnes TSX at 2600 fps. "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

Sell it for a 308, keep it as a collector item or start reloading. It's hard to have a niche cartridge right now if you aren't a reloader. Companies are too busy keeping up demand for more popular calibers. They probably won't do a production run anytime soon.

Academy sports has Hornady in stock and buffalobore.com has barnes. I have bought from academy quite a bit, fast shipping and no problems. Matthew

If you don't reload get rid of your 358 win. You can't afford to shoot them. Ammo is just too scarce in that cal. It is an easy round to load for, and for what you would pay for 3 or 4 boxes of ammo, you could get into reloading. If you like the 358, start reloading.....

You don't reload???? hahahahahahahahahahaha No one has any pity for you. If you don't reload you cannot really afford to be a decent shot. Sell your guns and take up bird watching. Seriously you cannot even find .358 brass. I bought my .358 BLR 20 years ago. The only brass I found was older boxes brass. I have never even seen .358 brass in plastic bags. To reload this round you probably would have to expand .308 brass. But you can reload 200 rounds in an afternoon. How long would that last you? If you don't want to reload find a friend to help you.

Honestly this is far too common a topic on a place called ACCURATE RELOADING. I feel as though Saeed should ban anyone who doesn't reload based on a 3 strikes policy. Bitch about the availability of a classic caliber 3 times and preach that you don't reload and your banned until you can post a photo of the RCBS rock chucker you purchased and pile of ammo you shucked out. A lot of folks on here who don't reload, aren't billionaires and are shooting 358 Wins and 500 Nitros. Kind of nonsense.

With a bit of careful shopping you can get into reloading for under $100. I might try Ebay. Lee makes very good products. With a hand press, a set of dies, Lee dies come with a powder dipper and a chart with powders that make good loads. This will be a slow process but it works well. Faster means more money but for a beginner slow is better. Leo The only way to know if you can do a thing is to do it.

This Is, ACCURATE RELOADING after all. I know guys that barely have a copies mentis grasp on reality that consistently produce quality, safe, reliable hunting and blasting ammo for their firearms. . I killed my very first deer with a 358 Winchester Savage 99 . With a 250 gr RNSP Hornady with 3031 iirc using a Lee Loader. That was a long time ago and since have killed more animals with reloads than I have factory ammo. Heck o billy. You can reload SO EASILY . It is one of if not the simplest forms of Rocket science. I can tell you that none/ most of us aren't trying or wanting to get after you. We just really encourage people to reload. Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

Joester just send that worthless , hard to find ammo for, rifle to me and just chalk it up to a failed experiment. I will keep others from trying the gun and keep it safe for history.

Well, fellas, I don't reload, in great part, b/c Lyme disease has eroded greatly some of my left-brain parietal lobe angular gyrus related abilities. And I'm a MENSA member, go figure!

Midway is full of ammo and cases. But how you can operate a rifle, but not a reloading press, beats me. Bent Fossdal Reiso 5685 Uggdal Norway

Some thoughts on the points made so far. Yes, AR is nominally for reloaders but is also a good all-round hunters' forum site - the reason I came to it. Some very intelligent hunters I know think life is too short for reloading and that rolling your own is a dangerous pastime. Maybe my rifles have tight dimensions because I never get anywhere near max - so if I want full power, I buy factory ammo and trust that the new brass will not fail. Yes, there are people who will reload for you and the ones where I live seem reliable and their prices reasonable. That .358 cases are hard to find is unfortunate but there must be few cases in the world more common than the .308/7.62 Nato.

I'm not putting down people that don't reload. If I didn't reload I would stick to readily available common cartridges like 308, 243, 270, 30-06, etc… It's just not practical to own niche cartridges if you don't reload. Ammo is too rare and too expensive. JMO.

I ended up with a 358 win this summer. Even old ratty once-fired 308 brass sized up with the tapered expander. I think I lost one neck due to a split case out of 50. I did run it through a 338 federal expander first. Find someone nearby that loads their own, buy a set of 358 dies and a 338 expander button and 308 brass and go visit for a fun afternoon. Shoot straight, shoot often. Matt

Able Ammo normally stocks Winchester, Hornady and Buffalo Bullets factory loadings. Correctly headstamped brass is available with a quick search if you are inclined to start loading. I've never thought of reloading as a "dangerous pastime". I've been reloading since I was 14 years old (no adult supervision)and can think of hundreds of common things that are far more dangerous than reloading. Follow the basic principals and all risk is reduced, no different than driving a car or running a chainsaw.

Thanks guys, I have reloaded for 40 years, mainly for economy or to achieve some aim unattainable otherwise, but rarely to get max power. When it comes to that one I look for a bigger cartridge.

What do we know by now? joester is: a. never going to post again or b. take up reloading Seriously, you can reload on something as simple as a Lyman Tong Tool or that dorky Lee thing. Laser-Cast offers a very nice 200gr RFN cast bullet. 10gr of Unique will give you a good plinking load for about twenty-five cents (maybe less) a shot, and the brass will last forever...

Holey Moley! I went on Ammoseek.com and looked for available .358 factory ammo, and was shocked at what I found! There is only one place in the country that currently has any, and it is 59 bucks a box for Winchester RN softs, and $85 for crappy Silver Tips!!! Just four months ago, there was plenty available for as low as $25 a box. Some day, Buffalo Bore will be able to get components and will start making it again. I suggest that when they do, you stock up. Sounds like five or six boxes will last you a lifetime.

Probably no on BOTH, Idaho... Is AR turning back into some twitter BS again...you two just lost all street cred with me for your negativity and smartazz comments, and you don't have a clue WHY joester doesn't reload or want to. You two act like you know something, WHY not help instead of blowing the guy out of the water???? It's comments like yours that need to be banned from AR.

Try this. It isn't cheap but it shows some availability. http://ammoseek.com/ammo/358-winchester You might also check on Academy.com for availability as well as others. The scarcity of .358 ammo suggests that its becoming more popular. I was able to find enough loaded ammo to last for a long spell NONA, thanks for your insights. There are a minority of posters on AR whose attitude comes across as "My way is the ONLY way !" Makes one feel sorry for their kids...
