Heard it based on shortened RUM case. Wish it was the 375 ruger case.

Not really much new there, in practical terms just a slightly larger .257 Weatherby from the data Steve gave - 129 grains at 3400 fps. Nine more grains, BFD. But new cartridges do add interest to the sport, sell more guns and keep ranges in business.

The 375 Ruger case is the one that makes most sense to me. As is for length put 270, 7mm, 30 and 338 on it. Never need to make another new cartridge.....ever.

They have ballistically re-invented the 6.5x68. Nothing is new.

129 grain bullet at 3,400 fps.

It's going to eat barrels like Rosie O'Donnell eats cupcakes.

Highlight the part about never need to make another new cartridge . . . . ever. Not until rail guns become readily available - I'm thinking a 2mm projectile weighing around 200grs at 10,000 fps. Projectile will necessarily need to be readily fangible to avoid the obvious implications associated with "cop killer" bullets. Okay you "designers", get with it.

If you pull up the ballistics profile on the original 6,5x68S this thing is small potatoes...

I can translate the marketing BS for you: "we are having trouble getting ANYBODY to buy the overpriced PF Nosler rifles. This new cartridge will, we pray, sell a few of these things...".

OK, let me be the Devils advacate here. Mad stir

My second centerfire, and my first bolt rifle was a 264 Winchester Magnum[a pre 64 Westerner]. I hunted with it for several years...

However, Why would anyone prefer a small calibre Magnum over a 300 Magnum??? Confused

For smaller big game, a 300 Mag, with a 150 gr bullet will do ANYTHING a smaller calibre mag will do. Wink

And with a 180gr or a 200gr bullet, a 300 Mag will do what NO smaller calibre Magnum can do... flame

And IF you tu2are doing things you do NOT need a Magnum for, then just use a 308... sofa

Of course a 300 magnum will be better and a 30-378 is BETTER yet Big Grin .......it all comes down to recoil and time of flight....

I can lie down and shoot my 264 with 140VLD's all day.....I wouldn't want to do that with a 30-378 and 210 VLD's.......

And as for using a 308..... Eeker

I just went to the Hodgdon website and looked at their reloading data for the .270 Weatherby and 130 Gr. bullets. They show a load with IMR 7828 at 3,500 fps. Looks like Nosler just reinvented the wheel.

but, what improvement are we seeing?

This just looks like the 375 Ruger. Will Nosler publish loading data that anyone can reach with a 24" barrel, or is this another of those deals where only factory ammunition will even get close.

But, the 270 Wby has a belt and is no good anymore.

A long freebore helped.
But using the shorter larger diameter 130gr bullet vs an equivalent sectional density 140gr bullet turned the table in favor of the Weatherby.

Heck a 130gr bullet fired from the 7mm Weatherby blows the door off the 270 Weatherby also firing a 130gr bullet. I believe the 7mm RemMag does as well.

But then I'd be playing the same apples vs oranges game with the same bullet weight using different calibers in this scenario as well.

If I recollect correctly, SD wise, it's:
.264 120gr = .277 130gr = .284 140gr
.264 130gr = .277 140gr = .284 150gr
or some such fairly closely...

And I don't have an iron in the fire as I sold my .257 Weatherby and .264 WinMag many years ago and have never owned any .277 or .284 caliber anything...

When you factor in the BC of the 140 VLD's, time of flight with a MV of 3425fps, reduced wind drift due to a 300fps increase in MV over a 264....and lack of recoil; it beats anything until you get to a 30-378 firing 190's or heavier.... tu2

I go along with Blair 338 RUM...plus a couple of points I will add

As to ballistics the 26 Nosler will match the 30/378 all the way. Naturally the 30/378 will hit harder at the longer range.

However, those of you have shot animals on a regular basis at 1000 yards will be aware they fall down very easily. It does not matter what you hit them with, they go down and are not long for this world.

LOL.

They DO go down very easily at long range. don't they Mike?

I believe it the lack of adrenaline as the animals do not recognise the report of the rifle, due to the distance. It is similar to the effect of using a silencer.

You can always swing a 6.5 Badger (6.5-.338 Ultra Magnum 40 degree shoulder).

Loaded, cream of wheat formed case(6.5 Badger) on the left, .300 WSM for comparison on the right. The Badger is sporting a 160gr Matrix.

The barrel has been chambered and is ready to go. I didn't have time to put one together yet myself so I sent my reamer to another forum member to get the ball rolling on load development. Should have some velocity reports out of the 30" McGowen by the end of next week. Should be interesting and down right wicked on open country Mulies.
