I have been looking at the CZ 550FS and have a couple of questions? Has anyone had any experience with this rifle and what would your choice of calibur be? I would use this gun for Plains Game, Wildebeest through Eland and Leopard. The only two caliburs that are available in this rifle that make sense to me are the 30-06 and 9.3 X 62. Any and all thoughts on this appreciated. Also would like to hear about the accuracy with this one. Thanks.

I love cz's and love mannlicher stocks. I finally was able to handle a cz and found it bulky. I gave myself a Ruger m77 RSI for Christmas and find it much handier. Haven't fired it yet though. I have a small Leupold 2X7 that should fit well. Intend to mount it and try it out this week.

Larry,

the 9,3x62...not even a contest there. Think of it as a 35 Whelen on steroids! The 9,3x62 would be plenty of rifle for anything but the Big Three; although it has done the job on them as well. I am going to Zimbabwe in August and it is likely a tossup between it and my CZ 416 Rigby loaded with 350gr bullets as my second rifle. The 550 Gibbs will see use on Buffalo, but the the 9,3x62 will be all the rifle I need for Zebra and Kudu or anything else. Mine is a Lux mannlicher stock, and is very handy. Add a set trigger for shots where you have more than ten seconds to take a shot...what more cna you ask? Mine is new and has the dual crossbolts.
This cartridge can do everything you want to do in Africa, IMHO.

Thanks IS - I should have added the question of recoil in my original post? What is the recoil comparison to 30 -06 or any other reference point you have? Since I have never shot this round, have to idea what "recoil catagory" it falls into.

All the best,

The CZ 550 9.3x62 felt recoil (at least to me) is similar to a 30-06 shooting 220gr. loads.

9.3x62 is an excellent choice. Stuff it with 286gr. Nosler Partition around 2400 and have a great time on your safari.

As far as recoil comparisons go, I can say this.....My 300 wby kicks the snot out of me while my Husky 9.3x62 is just a solid shove.

Both have recoil but the 9.3 is just different, It's a shove.....not a snap. My 15 year old Godson could handle my 9.3. (OK, he weighs 175 and is a big kid)

I hope this helps.

One issue in particular with Namibia, is that depending on where you hunt, you can run into some shooting at awful long range. This will obviously (or probably) not apply to your leopard hunting, but it sure can apply to plains game hunting, depending on where you hunt. If long range shooting should be the order of the day where you are going, you'll have to think hard about the practicality of a 9.3x62. The .30-06 would be quite a bit more versatile, and a .300 or .338 magnum of some sort even more so.

Great caliber. For Namibia I would go with the 250 grainers (Swift, Barnes, etc) and the scope zeroed for 200 yards. A 6x fixed Leupold would be great.

The recoil is similar to a 3006 with heavy bullets with max.loads. Just a shove.

I have one in a 270 Win and it shoots great, no make that incredible.

The only thing that I have noticed is it barks pretty good with the short barrel and no hearing protection (usually don't wear hearing protection while I'm hunting).

It's a good solid rifle. I really like mine.

I've never been to Africa, so I'll stay out of the caliber debate.

IMHO, which is just that;
the 9,3x62 will do everything you want to do. My FS carbine is not noticeably louder than my 24" bbl 30-06 with 180gr bullets. I am shooting Nosler 286gr Partition bullets at 2430+fps. Three shots in 1" at 100yds, and under 2.5" at 300yards. Can't ask for much better than that. Love that set trigger. Get one, you will NOT be sorry...Africa or anywhere else. Just about perfect "medicine" for big bears in the willow thickets where you might end up measuring shots in feet.

The 9,3x62 is a great calibre.

I have taken game to 300 yards with my 9,3x74R double, which has similar ballistics to your 20" 9,3x62.

I like the 286 gr Woodleigh Softs and Solids, and the Nosler Partition bullets best. If I thought I would be shooting over 250 yards I would go with the Nosler Partition.

Your CZ in 9.3x62 sounds great. I'll be using a custom Mauser 9.3x62 in Namibia come May with 256 grain RWS H-Mantle slugs (Hand loads, of course.)
