26 is giving exceptional results in .270 Win with 140 & 150 gr bullets which got my curiosity up about it’s possible use in the 9.3 x 62 Anyone have experience with this they want to share? All We Know Is All We Are

I believe that reloaded 26 is very likely much too slow for use in the 9.3x62. Try RL 15, RL 17, Ramshot TAC and Ramshot hunter. Matt FISH!! I got my Ramshot powder mixed up. Instead of Hunter, I meant Big Game. Varget is another good one. Matt FISH!! My best powder for the 9.3X62 is Varget. Re15 is ok. N150 is also good. I have not tried Re17 or the Ramshot powders but hear good things about them from knowledgeable people. "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

You've actually been able to procure some RL-26? I shoot it in 2 of my most recent rifles and I'm down to a pound and have not found any for a year! Zeke

I didn’t know it was scarce. I have a few pounds of it tucked away. All We Know Is All We Are

TREE'EM I can't comment on R-26 but I've been working with my custom 9.3x66 this summer which is only slightly different than the 9.3x62. I have found R-15 to work very well. 1 or 2 grains over the book max for R-15 in the 62 produced 2450 FPS with the 286 NP and 2625 FPS for the 250 ACB. No real advantage over the 62. Both loads produce MOA or less. R-17 is what is really shining. 69 grains gives 2740 FPS across the Lab Radar with sub MOA accuracy. I'll be testing R-17 with the 286 NP this week. Once I have everything tabulated I'll post pix of my budget custom, load specs and range results. Mark MARK H. Agree. RL-26 way slow. Norna 203B/RL15 and Varget best! I use the latter. 57 gr w/286 gr Woodleigh RNSN at the groove for 2,370fps with a 24.5" barrel. 58 gr got me 2,420 fps. I load the FMJ's .3 gr under for same POI at 100 yards. "Evil is powerless if the good are unafraid" -- Ronald Reagan "Ignorance of The People gives strength to totalitarians." Has anyone tried LEVEREVOLUTION in the 9.2x62? It's in the same burn rate range as the other powders good in the x62 and gives higher velocity in cartridges there is data for. M

I have seen several recommendations for RL-17 in the 9.3x62, but can not find any load data. Would any of you be willing to share what has worked for you? I have taken about 15 animals with the 9.3x62, but have used RL-15 and Varget. I would like to try RL-17. The bullets I use for hunting are the Nosler 250 gr. Accubond, Nosler 286 gr. Partition, and the Barnes 250 gr. TTSX. Thanks.

I was just shooting my 9.3 for the first time and used Big Game. 63gr gave me 2505 with North Forks out of a 25” barrel. Shot .85. I ain’t changing a thing.

BaxterB: What weight of North Fork bullet were you using? I assume that was about a maximum load? Thanks.

It was the 286. John Barnsness has loaded up to 66gr of Big Game under a 286. I had loads from 60 to 66 made up and I just watched the primers, cases etc. FPS were (respectively) 2344, 2408, 2461, 2505 (avg of 3), and 2560 (avg of 3). That’s right, at 64 gr it shot a three shot average of 2560. I stopped there. 63 gr will be the load. For the record, the 64gr load shot 1.00. Primers were a tad flat but still rounded at the edges. I have no reason to doubt the chrono as it’s been used plenty before and been OK These loads are well over what Ramshot suggests, so start carefully, etc. I think they are sticking to lower pressures. This was Lapua brass, Fed 210 loaded to 3.3 and crimped lightly with a Lee Factory crimp die. Have fun. It’s a cool round...

BaxterB: Thanks for all the information. I really enjoy the 9.3x62, and have used it on 2 trips to Africa and on whitetails and pronghorn here in the US. Took it elk hunting but did not get an elk.

Baxter, if you don’t mind saying, what maker/model and barrel length is your 9.3? Matt FISH!! It’s one of Tom’s Douglas barrels turned to the Mauser Model A profile. Finished at 25”. The gun is no lightweight but handles well and shoots eeasssyy... I actually like weighty rifles versus chopsticks...

Sounds pretty sweet! I like some weight with anything in the 06’ class or above, as well. Barsness’ 66 grains of Ramshot Gig Game data was supposed to be under 60k psi with a 286 grain partition. He was getting a rat’s hair under 2500fps with a CZ550 23.6” barrel. Even though you are using a different bullet, your loads seem to track well with Barsness’, and I would guess that the 64 grain load is very close to C.I.P. MAP. This is good news for those who might want hot-rod velocity, but not hot-rod pressure. However, one would be prudent to follow all basic handloading load development procedures with each individual rifle (as you have demonstrated). Thanks for all your info! Matt FISH!! Spot on Matt. I was emailing with John when I was loading this. The loads were very predictable and that 64gr load was serious business. I think the combination of the 25” barrel and North Forks helped. I’ve ordered what should be a lifetime of Nkrth forks. I’ll find a plinking load, but the NF will be THE hunting load. That Big Game is DENSE! One little teeny pellet moves my 10-10 scale. I trickle every charge so I often overshoot, have to dump a little and trickle back up.

I got my best velocity with RL-17 by about a 100 or more FPS.Its also very accurate, Only problem is I had so much ammo loaded with RL-15 that I never got around to shooting game with the RL-17 loads, and in the meantime sold my 9.3x62.. If I ever get another 9.3x62 I will definatly use RL-17..Got my loads out of Peirre van der walts, African Game Cartridges, and its update.
