Looking to start reloading for a new 300 wsm. I want a bullet with reliable expansion without it blowing up at high velocities at close ranges. Has anyone tried these Hornady SST bullets on deer sized game? What were the results?

Any help would be appreciated.

I've had very good results with SST's on deer in other calibers (280, 264, 7Mag). But I would think that you would do better to pick a 165 or 180 gr for the 300WSM. Jim

Justin,

I used the 150 SST out of my 300WSM last year on an antelope. It performed probably exactly as designed. Shot was approximately 200 yards at a quartering away buck, and I was slightly above. Entrance was about the second to last rib and exit was just behind the "elbow" on the opposite side. Exit hole was about the size of a half dollar.

The buck ran about 25 yards and fell dead, no movement.

Load was a max load of Varget. I don't have a chrono, but the manual gives a velocity of close to 3300 fps at the muzzle.

This bullet gives pretty darn good accuracy, as my average group is about 3/4" at 100 yards.

From my one experience with it on the antelope, I'd say it was a good bullet for deer sized game.

I been shooting the .300 WSM for some time since I bought it 2 years ago. I had just picked up a 9.3 so it may become the new apple of my eye. But bact to the subject at hand. Hornaday makes a dam near perfect bullet for the 300 WSM and deer size game. Its the 180 gr. Hornaday SP flat base. That bullet will do just perfect in close and across the back 40. I shoot those in mime, anong with a Nosler Partition and a Fail safe. One bullet weight, three different constructed bullets, all clock around 3,000 fps and all make a composite group of just a little over 1.8 inches at 200 yards. That means I can hit a grape fruit with any of the three. Do yourself a favor, load some and go hunt.

SST's should work fine for you but if you want to go a little tougher bullet, go with their "Interbonds"
