I'm planning a new .375 H&H build and I'm not sure which action to go with. Right now I'm leaning towards a Dakota 76. However, I really like the look of the double square bridge Mausers being produced by Granite Mountain. The Granite Mountain is significantly more expensive and it apparently takes several months to get one.

For those that are more experienced, is there any reason to go with the Mauser over the Dakota other than looks? Maybe I need to look for a pre-64 M70 and go that route. Any ideas?

If you can get a granite mountains arm action. There the best Cf action period.

If you can stand a push feed surgeon 1086 long actions are amazing. But a push feed needs to be mated to a caliber, meaning it's a nice thing to have a .375 ruger on a push feed action but not so nice to have a .375 h&h.

I'm having a .500a2 put together on a big stiller action, it will be nice it's a push feed action, does not worry me in the slightest, but a .500j on a stiller is wrong IMHO

I hear what you're saying. I have no doubt that a push feed action would work, but I'm still leaning toward CRF.

I really like the idea of the Granite Mountain but I haven't found much on them. I'm hoping someone will talk me in or out of one.

GMA, Prechtl, Empire, Saterlee...they're all great new-production Magnum Mauser actions, and all are probably pretty close to $5K in the white if you can find them. A Dakota is a Model 70 copy, and a good one, which can be had for $2,000-$2,700 from the right sellers, leaving you funds for other "stuff". Life is like that...the most desirable toys have the biggest price tags. If not, we'd all be shooting guns by Hartmann & Weiss or H&H !

consider the 375 on a cz or the ruger RSM and have it restocked ... and or worked over by AHR

I am building a 404 Jeffery on a GMA action. I think they are closer to $3,000-$3,500. I think GMA gives gun builders a discount off of what an individual can purchase one for, possibly $500 or so from what I remember.

The GMA action my gun builder purchased was a standard mag. action which would work for a 375 H&H. I really like the Double Square Bridge action for scope mounting, etc. The GMA actions are nice and I would choose one over a Dakota even with the additional cost.

I'm with jjs; there's no comparison between a GMA and Dakota action. The determining factor is going to be your overall budget for the rifle. If you're building a <$5,000 rifle, go with the Dakota. If you're building a >$10,000 rifle, go with the GMA. If you're building something in-between, then take your choice, but the GMA is going to be more expensive to buy and to build on.

I'd say to pick the action depending on the style of rifle you want. For an American Classic styled rifle, I would pick the Dakota.

For a British style rifle, I'd pick the GMA. In fact, I am having just such a rifle built now. It. Has been about two years since I paid for it, so I might be wrong, but if I recall correctly the GMA was quite a bit south of $5000. More like $3000.

I'm pretty sure that a Dakota runs over $2000.

Cabela's in Boise has a nice P64 in 300 H&H. Might be a good one to pick up and have it rebarreled with a matching contour 375.

I was planning on building a 375 HH on a pre 64 and changed my mind at the last minute and went with a mauser. I now have the 300 HH action which is in pristine condition. If your interested, it would be a good start for your custom.

You can find a old beater pre-64 model 70 rifle in say 30-06 and have it converted to 375 H&H all for around $1,000. IMO it is every bit as good for a using rifle as an expensive Mauser action.

I'd buy this (assuming the price is right) long before I'd buy a Dakota. Duane Wiebe is working on a box and bottom metal that will allow 4 down in a standard configuration - I'd use this unit on a classic rifle.
