Looking into building an nice custom rifle using the enfield mark action. Me and my neighbor both have them. What barrel do i need for shooting over 190gr bullets. IE: hawk, Woodleigh and other heavy solids. Who makes a good stock for it also. And if anyone has done this before can you post some pics to show me how this will come out. Thanx for all your time and help.

adam-

Here's a few pictures of work in progress. The following is a part's list, so to speak:
Bolt handle from Jerome Glimm
Three position safety: Ed LaPour
Bases: Tally Manufacturing
Trigger: Timney
Barrel: Lilja, be sure to ask for a 1.25 inch OD shank

Dennis Olson of Plains, Montana did the metal work; this one is a .300 H&H. He is working on the mate to this rifle in .375 H&H.

You will find that bottom metal is a bit of a problem as there are no aftermarket sources for trigger guard/floorplate assemblies as there are for Mausers and Model 70 Winchesters. Therefore, one must be somewhat content with altering existing bottom metal.

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Enfield Mark.....do you mean the 1917 Enfield?

The one posted by 30 Cal Mag Fan is a superb example of good work on an Enfield.

However they're heavy actions and should be reserved for big magnums like the .375 H&H and bigger. These cartridges make good use of the weight in the action where something like a 30-06 will be burdened with excessively heavy weight.

Further, while there are folks that use the Eddystones it is something many smiths don't recommend. It is my feeling that only Winchester and Remington mfrs be used for customization.

One more thing....these guns are very expensive to convert to sporters...much more so than Mausers.

If your keeping the original 303British chambering and barrel, a nice sporter can be built on either a SMLE or No4 action. If your after a heavier caliber, then there's the option of a 303/35. A No4 could be rebored for it and spruced up with a fresh stock. I looked into it but backed out as reloading dies would be too costly to source in Australia. Another problem was by the time I finished my No4 in 303/35, it was cheaper to just buy a Ruger 350RemMag ... which I did Big Grin

30 cal mag fan,
That Enfield is stunning!!! Originally an Eddystone, Remington or Winchester? Bottom metal was reworked I take it? Just beautiful!

adam & vapodog-

My apologies, my bad. I saw Enfield and not mark when I read the post. When I read adam's post a second time I realized my mistake. Sorry fellows.

Con-

Thanks for the complements, the M-1917 started it's life as a Remington thus, I did not have a "duck pond" to contend with. The original bottom metal was straightened to eliminate the "dog-leg."

I know this is tacky, but I have access to a Remington Enfield for about 100 bucks. How much do you have in the Olson action - it is a very nice looking job. Maybe I could build a 404 J on one. You are going to have two super nice rifles there.

If you are talking about a SMLE, I used a No1 mark 3 to build a 45-70 for hog hunting. I worked out great, but have only got to to hog hunting once since I put it together.

Up here in Canada, you almost have to give the sporterized Enfields away. It is the full wood ones that are fetching the high prices.

Very nice rifle, Mark. Would it be possible to post a picture of how the bolt stop was modified? More precisely how is the bolt stop spring supported. The ones I have seen that have been shortened, hardly exert enough pressure to keep the bolt stop flat against the receiver.
