If that's the best, then why does Remington put a 1:16 twist in their rifles? Confused

Because they have their heads up their rectal orifaces.
Seriously The Whelen and the .358 Win. were both designed to use a 1 in 12" twist.
However, Big green was set up to use a 1 in 16" twist that they used for the .35 Remington. Why set up for a different twist for the Whelen when you get away with the 1 in 16" twist?
Ackley in his book specified 1in14" as standard and 1 in 16" as a "special" twist. Ruger, when they made the M77 in both the .358 and .35 Whelen used Remington's 1 in 16" twist.
My thoughts are that between Remington's bean counters and the fact that based on history or ather cartridges like the .338 Win. Mag. where the loads with the heaviest bullets were dropped, they decided to set up to shoot the lighter 200 gr. bullets. Seems strange that I can go to my local gun stores and only find Remington 200 gr. loads for the Whelen, but no 250 gr. loads. When I ask them to special order them, they say they can't get them or they're discontinued, yet Remington still shows them on their website.
Sometime in, IIRC, the early 1970s, C.E. "Ed" Harris wrote in the American Rifleman that Whelen and Howe settled on the 1 in 12" twist to shoot 250 to 300 gr. bullets for heavy game.
JMHO, but I feel that Remington and Ruger screwed up royally when they used the 1 in 16" twist for the Whelen.

What Paul said...

Also, the 350 RM and Whelen were 16" in Remingtons, but Savage, Winchester, and Ruger (I think) all used 12" on their 358s...

Per Shilen the recommended twist rate for the .358 is 1:14 for all bullet weights.http://sst.benchrest.com/shilentwist.html

If your definately going to stick with 225-250gr then the 1:16" should be fine. I also agree that all 35's should have been standardised at 1:12".
Cheers...

I'm going to shoot 200's most of the time but 225's are the biggest I'll ever shoot. BTW...I'll be shooting the Barens TSX's for all my big game hunting. One other question would the 1:12 shoot the 200's fine..?

Get the 1-12" twist and then you won't have to ever think about it again. The 358 Win shoots the 180 Speer very well.
