The modern day Karamonjo Bell of Australia in the flesh! Nice bull and good shooting. the rifle looks like it might be an original Rigby?

Yes, Sir! This Rigby rifle was made in 1898. Still going strong! I just wish it could talk, hey.

Mate, that Model 70 .458WM of yours has certainly been there and done that... When you come up sometime, I'll tell you a good story around the campfire!

Good fun! Note the colour of the faded Khaki shirt.

Still in my work get-up, mate! The old Katherine School of the Air shirt enjoys this sort of thing more than sitting in the office, that's for sure! Something I've noticed is that white or cream coloured clothes aren't terribly out of place up here amongst the white gums and paperbarks. Avoid sideways movement, and stick to shadows where possible, and you're in with a decent chance.

The Rigby really is a superior cartridge. You'd never be able to make that shot successfully with a 7x57 Mauser.

Impossible! Didn't anyone tell you Bell and Corbett were ficticious characters and Eleanor O'Connor was actually Jack's inflatable love doll that he made up stories about. That bovine is your pet you hypnotized for the photo op. Come on, level with us on this. NRA Life Member DRSS-Claflin Chapter Mannlicher Collectors Assn KCCA IAA

Eleanor began using the custom M98 7x57 Jack had built for himself. Mrs O'Connor; she also used a .30/06 to take two tigers, a lion, and an elephant- with one shot kills. Jack O'Connors last rifle was a push-feed Ruger M77 in .280rem ..

BenKK I would dearly love to hear more about your Little Rigby. The Mauser SN would be of interest as well as the Rigby SN If this is one of the 1898 Rifles then you have one of the very first 1000 rifles built on the transition pre 98 action. I have two of these little guns, one with a very low SN 1** and one with a SN 9** The Mauser Shipping ledgers recorded these barrelled actions as going to Rigby in batches as referenced in Jon Speed's Mauser archives. Rigby in London now have the early Rigby ledger where these rifles are documented by Rigby SN

The 275 outdated...er, ah, well, OK so what we need is to compare the 275 Rigby to the 7x57 mauser, I would think some gun scribe would jump on this? Thats worse than the 270 vs.the 30-06 and I've read that one umpteen jillion times by those gun scribes, maybe more! In the meantime I must run out to the shop and change the stamp on my 275 to 7x57 so it won't be obsolete.. Actually all kidding aside there is a minute difference in bore size, but it seems to have worked both ways for about 200 years or so.. different bore size? Orig. Mauser barrels in 7mm mauser/7x57 and orig. Mauser barrels marked 'Rigby .275 high velocity' , have identical bore & groove size. and they also have identical throats...hence, One could fire the 173gn or 140gn HV in a No:2 Rigby rifle. > Bell purchased several Rigby [No:2] .275 HV marked rifles - and proceeded to famously use the DWM 173gn solid through them. Rigby never had any commercially available ammunition stamped as .275 Rigby simply put its own shop label over the Kynoch 7mm Mauser boxes. Now just bear in mind, that the Bell purchased Rigby 7mm rifle that Ruark owned, most likely was never used by Bell in his famous ivory treks.....

Oh, just admit it Ben: that Buff died of old age while waiting for that bullet to arrive... (*Nice to see the 7x57 in action!) Regards, Robert ****************************** H4350! It stays crunchy in milk longer!

Well, almost. You see, I load to the absolute minimum charge. I believe that helps my little bullets penetrate better and kill big animals.

Ben, thanks for sharing this. You did some fine work with a rifle that's been quietly, consistently and efficiently killing game since the early days of smokeless. Loving your B&W photos again! There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author
