Hy, my buddy is trying to decide which rifle to purchase, it is either the Rem. 700 in 300WM. or the new win.70 in 300WM. The Rem. has a 26" barrel, while the Win.70 has a 24" barrel. His question is, is there that much difference in MV. and accuracy out to 300 yds. to make a difference in barrel length's. He is partial to the new Win. model 70. Any info would be apreciated, Thank's: Rick.

Accuracy wise it is hard to figure out which one will shoot better. Velocity wise you will probably only be talking 100 fps difference at the muzzle. I like both rifles and would probably be happy with either.

If he leans to the Win then there he should go. I think it's toss a coin on these rifles, but I will say every one I know who has one of the new Wins, loves 'em. Good luck to your buddy.

Tell him to try to get his hands on both guns. Spend some time handling them and deciding what he likes about them. (Such as the balance, the safety, the trigger, the finish, etc.) There will not be enough difference in performance of the two barrel lengths to matter. Which will shoot more accurately is a guessing game. I own primarily Remingtons and would look there first for a new rifle. Having said that, I won a Winchester Model 70 just before they stopped making them a couple of years ago and I really like that rifle. R Flowers

You'll get a bit more velocity out of the 26" barrel, but not really enough to notice huge performance gains, especially with factory ammo. With hot reloads, the extra length might matter a bit more. Both will be decent rifles. I think the Winchesters feel a bit more solid and robust to my hands than the Remingtons, but the Rems are about $300 cheaper up here. ________ "...And on the 8th day, God created beer so those crazy Canadians wouldn't take over the world..."

A 300Wmag does not really need a barrel longer than 24". Loadtech calls the difference more in the range of 30-50fps. Saying that you could easily have a 24" barrel that would give a higher velocity than another rifle with a 26". I would go with the rifle he likes and that feels the best for him. Taking a 180gr accubond with 100yd zero even with 100fps difference at 300yds the drop difference is .2". What he hits will never feel the difference either. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

The Rem 700 has lots more aftermarket stuff going for it...I would lean that way. Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too! Recent college grad, started a company called MK Machining where I'm developing a bullpup rifle chassis system.

If your buddy is planning on walking and climbing and carrying his rifle, I would recommend the lighter and handier rifle. That would probably be the Winnie with the shorter barrel, but I can't say. If he is a road hunter or a benchrest long range shooter (where weight and portability is secondary), he should go with the more accurate gun, likely the Remmie. Thank's guy's, i"ll pass on the info to him. I am sure all he needed was a little convincing on the Winchester, he all ready has a Win.70 in .270 cal. This new gun will be his new rifle for moose hunting. Thank's again: Rick.

Approximately 35 fps in muzzle velocity per inch of barrel. Go with the rifle for which there is passion.
