"On Thursday, 12 July 2007 on a hunt in the Pongola area, I took a 'well placed' shot at a Bluewildebeest cow that was standing about 100 yards away in the shade of a tree, not knowing at that stage that the target animal's shoulder was actually right behind a ± 2½" thick tree branch.
Due to the shade it was impossible to see the dark brown branch against the almost black background of the Bluewildebeest.
When the shot rang out the animal took off in the same direction as the rest of the herd.
It was only on close inspection that I realised that the bullet went right through the branch and then thought here I have a wounded Bluewildebeest to track down and hopefully finish off.
However, after quite a long search and tracking we found the dead Bluewildebeest cow.
The most amazing part of it all was that the GSCHV 150gr 30-06 bullet still completely penetrated and exited the animal as if there were not a single obstacle in front of the animal's shoulder.
This was my first hunt with GSCHV bullets, but definitely not my last!"
Hendrik von Metzinger - 14 July 2007.

We all know that a B/W is a tough animal to kill with a direct hit, but to have a bullet going first through a thick branch and still kill the B/W is really an excellent performance for the GSCHV bullet!

Anyone else had similar experience with another make of bullet?

Usually a lot of meat damage is caused to game hunted with a 7mm Rem Mag and ordinary lead/copper jacketed bullets - especially on the opposite side of the entrance wound on the animal - more so if these bullets do exit.

Below is an excellent example of both the entrance (first picture) and exit wounds (second picture) of a 130gr GSCHV bullet fired out of a 7mm Rem Mag at a muzzle velocity of 3400fps over a distance of ± 150 paces into a matured Kudu cow hunted for biltong recently.

Absolutely the minimum meat damage and she was found dead within 10 paces from where she was shot.

Recently had an incident with monolithic bullets used by a hunter in his 30-06 resulting in a full day's follow up on a B/Wbeest bull he shot.

The first shot was taken at 180 yards and he hit the B/W high on the shoulder - too high and not reaching any of the vitals.
Bull was spotted three hours later in the same herd by only a bloodspot on his shoulder.

Second shot fired from about 100 yards - this time a bit lower on the body, but further back behind the shoulder.
Lung blood was found later and the B/W was still going strongly.
After another 4 hours' tracking the B/W was found standing under a tree in the shade.
He was finally killed with a frontal brain shot from a distance of 30 yards.

All three the 130gr Impala bullets whistled through the B/W - the first with very little damage, the second I felt should have killed the animal, but didn't and the third exited through the neck with vertebrae damaged after it went through the brain.

Apparently these bullets don't mushroom at all and if the hunter can't shoot securely on the spot to reach the vitals, he should expect to have extremely long follow ups, like in this case, or alternatively lose the wounded animals.

Totally unexeptable bullet performance, especially with the second shot that was a definite lunger who also did very little damage!

Well just look at the Impala bullets, that tells me they are not intended to expand. I have shot them but never would use them and all the velocity in the world is worthless if the bullet does not expand IMO...

Try the GS Custom bullets from RSA, they sure are a good bullet.

The Impala bullets are developed from Kobus du Plessy and are manufactured in RSA.

Does anyone have good experiences with those bullets!

Good shooting and good hunting

Follow this link to the GS Custom website in RSA where they are manufactured.

They are also available in the USA - GSCHV.

Gecko were there some signs of deflection or tumbling, went the bullets straight through the BW?

Here is an extensive test:

Please let us know when somebody has written a similarly neutral and precise report on the Swiss "Gian Marchet" bullets. Wink

Safarischorsch, no deflection or visible signs of tumbling - the bullets went straight through the BW leaving small calibre size entrance, exit holes and basically the same small sized wound channels.

carcano91:

Can we have that report in English with pictures please? - All pictures are empty grey blocks only - also this note is shown:

The link is in German so I do not understand it well. Does it say that a 30-06 was used with a 130grain Impala bullet. Animals varied in weight from about 25 pounds to 120 pounds. Most were on the 25 pound side. All the animals ran some distance before they expired. It looks like the bullet turned inside some of the small animals and most were shot side on. Is that about right?
