I'm looking to pick up another rifle. Looked into the 9.3x66 from Sako but brass isn't available. I'm looking into a 300 mag. RUM burns to much powder IMHO for the slight incr over the 300 WBY. Sako 75 Stainless/Synthetic Weatherby Mark V in Stainless/Synthetic Both in 300 Wby. Which would you pick and why. I know the stocks won't come close to the McMillan stocks but which one is more ridged. Feedback appreciated. Scope would be a 3-9 conquest.

The WBY has a Bell&Carlson stock I believe or something along those lines. It will be a little more rigid than the SAKO's injection molded stock, although SAKO's stock is the most rigid injection molded stock I have ever picked up. I wouldnt buy either one for the stock, I would buy them for the action and barrel. The Sako has more stainless parts, especially internally. theSako is cheaper and McMillan makes stocks for Sako 75's so down the road you could upgrade if you want. I have never heard of anyone having trouble with either stock

I think you will find that the Wby Stainless/Synthetic is a rubber type stock...which I think are better than fibre glass for accuracy....but I might be one of only two or three people in the world who think that way If it was me I would buy the Wby because it is a much better action to bed than the new Sakos with their funny recoil lug system. In addition I would buy the Wby so as to avoid the Sako's scope mounting system. However, if you are bloke who just wants to get the rifle out of the box etc and not worry about bedding, scope mounts etc. then I think the Sako is the way to go. BUT, I would get the 300 Ultra. If you decide on Wby you might also consider the Accumark. I think that is Weatherby's main rifle at the moment and as a result I think their efforts are directed towards the Accumark. The Accumark has the fibre glass stock if you are looking for a rigid stock. Mike

The Weatherby is a heavier, bulkier action, and though acceptable in quality, is not as refined as the Sako, nor does it have as good a trigger. I would prefer to put the weight in places that it makes a difference, like in the barrel; therefore I prefer the Sako. My personal prejudice, but I don't like the radiused shoulder or the freebore of the .300 WBY. I would prefer a .300 Winchester, .300 RUM, or best of all a .300 built on the 8mm Remington case similar to the .300 Jarrett.

I'd take the Sako 75 because practically everything about it is better. I've got two and I had no problem at all bedding the actions of either one. One's a .300 Wby Hunter Stainless and the other's a 7mm Rem Mag Hunter model. Both are quite accurate I might add. BTW, my .300 Wby sports a 3-9 Conquest in Sako Optilock mounts, a setup I could not be happier with. I can't address the stock issue as both of mine have the walnut variety.

I'VE GOT a Wby .340 in a glass stock and I have a Sako 995 in .340Wby. Both have McArthur brakes so recoil is NOT an issue of any kind. Both have Shepherd 310 P1 scopes, so scopes are not a variable. The Sako is lighter, the bbl is thinner, the action is great, it is well made and it shoots well although it does NOT like heavy-225gr and up so far as I have tested. The Wby, is also well made, has a GREAT bbl, good action, feels more durable(it's a physical thing) and is about 1+1/2 pounds heavier. It shoots 250gr GameKings into one hole and 300gr MatchKings into a smaller hole. The Wby outshoots the Sako shot for shot all day long. The Sako will shoot minute of whatever you want to hunt, but if your hunting rifle also doubles as your lllloooonnnggggg range plinker, then tightness DOES count . The Wby shoots the 250s into 8-9" at 1000yds, the Sako just can't compete with that. I play with the Sako, I HUNT with the Weatherby.

My Weatherby is a bare bones .340 Sporter model with a Burris Signature 4 X 16 scope that is extremely accurate and always has been. I have taken Elk, Moose, Deer of both Whitetail and Mule varieties. ----- My Sako was a 995 Model with a 3 X 9 Redfield scope, that I could get to shoot .5 inch groups and an occasional one holer but not the consistent one holers the Weatherby shoots. The scope difference may have made a been part of the problem. I swapped it for a skeet shotgun, but would not have hesitated to hunt anything in North America with it. I only swapped it because I got twice what I had in it. Good luck and good shooting.
