I currently have 3 Winchester 100s and 4 88s. I like the Winchester 100s in 243 and 308, but had feeding issues with the 284s. I have a Winchester 100 in 308 that is used primarily for culling whitetails and probably has accounted for a couple hundred deer, all shot with whatever brand of 150 grain factory ammo was the least expensive.

I don't like the pistol grip geometry of either rifle, but it is less offensive on the 100 then on the 88.

No, but I'd like to get a clean Pre 64 100 or 88 and rebarrel it to 358 Win. Lou

Have not shot either. However, back in the mid-60s I shot in a weekly league;both those models had to shot in the bolt action sporter class.

Dr. Lou: buy a decent 88 450 or less off the gunsites (I got one for 421 last week) then send it off to be Rebored to .358 Work on the rest, stock ect. if you want to
This is what I did, in effect you have a new bbl on the inside. Mine shot great. I made the mistake of loaning it to an elk hunting friend in Colorado and he won"t give it back. But, calls for some of my special elk loads every year. It's been 10 yrs now and he has stot all manner of game with it's the only rifle he carries any more. You should see the whapper moose he killed with it in Alaska.

There was a "Recall" on the M100s 25-30 years ago. Do not remember the M88s in on it, but they may have been. Memory of what the Recall was about is fading also, maybe something to odd with the Trigger.

I can recommend the NRA Tear Down Manual if you happen to get either one. Without it, it is very easy to break the stock during re-assembly. Gave the Manual I had to a buddy who had a M100.

The biggest problem I'm aware of with the M100 is Feed Jaming. Lots of complex stuff going on inside the M100 compared to other semi-autos. And as usual with any removable Magazine rifle, it is best to have at least 3-5 magazines. Use all the magazines a good bit to make sure they Feed properly.

The Jams are not Bullet Specific. Even good old Round Nose Bullets will Jam in one that is so inclined.

They both carry extremely well in my hands when afield, which I consider very important. But, if the M100 Jams, you basically have a Single Shot rifle.

Good Hunting and clean 1-shot Kills.

Hard Luck, thanks for the note. I have thought about that option but wondered how they can neatly re-mark the new caliber on the barrel without making a mess. I know it sounds picky, but I am strange that way. Lou
