Thats prety cool,
But for me since its such an american rifle, I would do it in the whelen.
I know lots of people swear up and down the 9.3X62 is a better round, but in a lever I think the whelen just fits better...tj3006

You were walking on egg shells when you wrote that Big Grin I with you all the way. Nice rifle, but should have been a Whelen. Stick mine in a Mauser.

Nice rifle! I agree that it I think should have been a .35 Whelen. Now, I'm a big fan of the 9.3x62 but the .35 Whelen just seems more "natural" in a Model 1895. Use a 1-12" twist (or maybe a 1-14"), load some 310 gr Woodleigh RN bullets to around 2250 fps and go thump some stuff in the bush! That's slightly better ballistics than the old rimmed 400/350 Rigby cartridge and it had an excellent reputation in Africa back in the day.

I've got a Browning Model 1895 (circa 1984) in .30-06 that I have thought about having rechambered/rebored. But, I decided just to keep it as is in .30-06. I figure a 220 gr RN at around 2400 fps in the .30-06 will get any job done I need to do with my Model 1895.

35 Whelan, maybe, but in 9.3 it just begs to go to Africa where it would be at home. How many cartridges does the magazine hold?

I'm with you Tom, it should be a 35 Whelen, and much better, and more versatile cartridge.

Couldn´t agree with you more..a classic american Leveraction in a european caliber...a great misconception.....that´s how we think too when see a classic Mauser in a american kaliber.. Wink

Yes Lawndart there were a bunch shipped to the Czar in 7.62x54R I think? Actually I think I read that most of the 1895's produced were sent there.
I could be mistaken.

I like it as is.....a classy classic and I would carry it any day. It outshines the Whelen by leaps and bounds.

Yes, indeed. We have a bunch of them here in Finland, a great deal of them in 8,3x53R and 9,3x53R sporterized from the original banded musket type of the Imperial Russian Navy taken from the Russian soldiers when they were disarmed in 1918. Had an original 7,62mm some years ago, complete with bayonet and all - even took it deer hunting once. They work really well with the flanged x53R cartridges.
I sold it to a local collector. CRYBABY

It seems everything we sell to the Russians ends up in Finland Big Grin.

I do like the 35 Whelen though. When the container from Lapua is late arriving I use Whelen brass to make 9.3x62 cases......
