I have worked up a good load for my 7Mag using the 140gr TripleShock. With 72gr of RL22, I can get 3300FPS and .75' groups at 100yards. This will be my PA whitetail load. I'm wondering if the 140grTSX would be enough for blackbear? or should I go up to the 160gr? I bought a box of the 160gr for Elk and moose, but I think if possible, I'd like to stick with the 140's for everything in PA.

Also, my father just purchased a 7mm-08 Remington Mt. Rifle. This gun is beutiful! It's the LSS style. I never loaded for this caliber. I'm looking for some loads using the 140gr Ballistic tip, or any 140gr to that matter. Thanx for your time.

You bet the 140 will do for black bear! I know people who use the 140's for elk in the 7 Mag. with perfect satisfaction. I have killed several 6'5"+ blackies with the 150 Nosler Partition in the .270 Win., and was perfectly happy with their performance! I did shoot one twicew, but it was because he was running, and I wasn't too sure of my placement of the first shot. Turned out that the second shot was NOT needed. as the first one had turned his lungs into a bloody soup, with nothing remaining in front of his diaphragm larger than a quarter! Range, 180 yards across a mud flat in Galena Bay, Alaska.

3300 fps ? I hope you're only shooting at long range otherwise you'll do a lot of damage. I would prefer a 160. The average PA buck is 150 lbs and a 6.5x55 ,140 @2750 will do a fine job. Are you aware that last year the three top bear in PA weighed over 800 lbs ?? Typical bear shooting will be close range so high velocity will not be needed. The 160 offers high weight and sectional density for penetration ,more appropriate than the 140.

speed is the best ingrediant when shooting the barnes bullet. take you TSX's at 3300 and shoot the biggest bear you can find.

i shoot a 900 pound bison through both shoulder with my 7mm and 140 barnes. you dont need the 160 when you have 3/4 incch accuracy.

The 140gr tsx will retain more weight and out penetrate most 160gr bullets due to it's construction.

Unlike other bullets, the tsx will not blow up at short ranges. At short ranges and high velocities, the results will be minimal damage, maximum dead.

wack'em and stack'em with the barnes bullets.

as with what 280Ackleyrized said you can blow them up. i have pulled some out of the dirt at 100yrds and the were dinged up but a normal bullet would have been in peices.

I shoot them out of my 7x57 at just over 2,900 fps (chronographed). I have only shot one small sized boar so far, but it did the trick. It was a full running shot at approx. 50 yards. I hit the boar just behind his shoulder and the shot knocked him off his feet and rolled him. He was dead when he hit the ground. Due to the downhill angle, the bullet exited through the shoulder.

Here is the result:

I would have no problem using this bullet on a black bear.

I worked up loads last weekend with the 140gr Barnes TSX for my 7mm-08 Rem 700 Ti and came away very impressed. Using H414 shooting 3 shot groups, I started at 43gr and worked up in 1gr incriments to 46gr then added a 1/2gr at the time to work up to 48.0.

Day 1:
47.0 chronographed at 2811 fps 1.5" MOA
(Nosler Partition clocked at 2809 fps - 47.0 3 shots)
47.5 ........... at 2860 fps 1.3"
48.0 ........... no data (too dark)1.0"

Day 2:
47.7 @ 2889 fps .35" 1st bullet touches #2, #2 touches #3
48.0 @ 2911 fps 1.2" in a horizontal line

The 48.0 load is a little too hot, some primer flattening and my last shot showed some primer cratering. No problems with the 47.7 load at all.
I'll be shooting some more 47.7 loads to verify in the next week or two.

I've had my best results with H414. I've used a little H380 and like the way it fills the case but limited use to this point.
