I have in the neighborhood of $1500 to $1800 to spend on a 338 RUM or Edge. I shot left handed and am wanting a good long range rifle.

I was thinking 28" barrel on a Mcmillan stock but all suggestions are welcome.

What action to go with? What barrel company?

Unless you can find a good used 338 RUM like a Remington to convert, I don't think it can happen on your budget.

Good Rem BDLs, CDLs, and sometimes LSSs can be had for under $600, would that be a good starting point then?

Does savage make a LH gun that the RUM would fit in or is Rem my only "Real" option?

Will you be having the work done in the US?

I bought a new left hand Remington 700 BDL in 300RUM last March for $520 off Gunbroker. There were others in 338 RUM for the same price. Mine shot Nosler Custom 180gr Accubond ammo into under an inch (3 shots) straight out of the box. Who needs a new barrel? I could have easily put that barrelled action into a McMillan, had it bedded, trigger job and called it good for under your budget. Just depends on what you're looking for.

Yep, in the good ole US of A.

I could just use my 300 RUM that I have and rechamber and barrel it, but the problem is getting it back to the states for the work. I will not be coming back for a visit until next Jan. If you don't mind 700s, it should run about 1K extra for the build if you can find a 700 action and LH stock.

I'm having a rig built now off of a 700 action and HS stock I already had. Accurizing, bbd Lilja, Holland lug, Sako extractor, and skim bed is running just a bit over 1k. I'll be adding quite a bit more than that before it's over, but for the rifle alone ready to roll, 1800 is enough.

It ain't my personal cup of tea, but I know several folks that have these rifles, (in different calibers, and they shoot damn well with out a whole lot of fuss. I'm sure they make it in left hand, at least in '06 and other calibers they do, and you could get a McMillan stock and stay around your budget, the fellows I know who have them like the 'overmolded' stock it comes with though BTW

300 RUM would do quite nicely on long-range. Other-wise, find a good deal on a 338 RUM, spend the rest on good optics. 28" versus 26" barrel, might get 80-100 fps more - no difference.

Why does it have to be A "custom" rifle can't a factory LH 338 RUM be had in the price range that you stated ? Sir mauser has a good point about optics.

It doesn't have to be custom, but again my first thought was to use the Rem 700 action that I have, logistics might end up being the problem there.

As for the optics, I have that covered, I will use the Zeiss 4.5X14-50 Rapid Z-800 that I already have.

Good luck with your RUMs. I own 2 RUMs one in 338 and the other one is a 300. They both shoot right to POA.

If you already have the 300 RUM, have you looked into re-boring the rifle instead of rebarreling? Cutrifle.com can rebore from 308 to 338, and it runs 300$. There is always the chance it fails, but then they don't charge you and will give you a discount on a rebarrel in house. 300 vs 500-700 for all the work is a heck of a deal and then nothing changes on the rifle but the caliber. That would leave you plenty of money for a top quality stock like a McMillan or custom made MPI and other upgrades to the action, trigger and bedding.

With action in hand, you can do a lot with your budget.
-True action, buy barrel, chamber/crown and install will run in the neighborhood of $700.
-McMillan stock ~$700
-Tuning up the factory trigger $100

If I was going to do this and had the same budget, I'd probably bypass the McMillan stock for the time being and put that money into better bottom metal, lightweight firing pin, maybe spring for a PTG Bolt and put the trigger tuning money into an aftermarket trigger. The stock can always come later and even though I'm a big fan of McMillan stocks, you can do a good bedding job yourself on the current stock for cost of materials and upgrade later if you have the notion.

I found 2 NIB Rem 700's left hand SS 338RUM's from an estate sale. Had the action trued and factory barrel was recrowned. Shoots well under MOA. I did drop it into a McMillian (and bedded it) hunter stock. Stock was $400.

I would look for a second hand one as many a shooter cant handle the recoil and sell prior to reaching 200 rounds. I would think you can get a used BDL online for less than $500. Add $400 for stock; $250 for truing action. That leaves plenty of cash left for a Zeiss Conquest in 4.5x14x44

I have a new in box Rem 700 BDL 338 RUM left hand. Priced at $589.00 plus S&I.
I had an Edge a couple years ago and didn't feel the slight increase in velocity--less than 100 fps-- was worth the effort. To get that I had a 28" barrel.
For long range, I also have a NIB Weatherby Accumark 30-378 Wby left hand priced at $1679.00 plus S&I.

I found a NIB Weatherby Accumark LH in 340 weatherby mag that I think I will go with $1449 + shipping. Is there any action work that would need to be done on a Weatherby or are they fine out of the box?

They are a mass produced product so they vary. I've had one that was great, except the safety was VERY stiff, I stoned it up a bit and it was fine without much fuss. I have a friend who is a Weatherby nut, and he has had several that were just great straight out of the box, had one--a 257 Weatherby, that wouldn't feed worth a crap, gunsmith fixed that for like $50...maybe doesn't have anything to do with it, but all his mag length actions, e.g., 300 Wby, 30-378 Wby, 338-378 Wby, 7 Wby all feed great and no other issues. His 7 and 30-378 Wby Mags are unreal accurate, and all he shoots is factory stuff.
