I've been waiting for Winchester to come out with a 338 WSM in something like the Model 70 carbine. I looked into building a 338-08 in a Model 7 or buying a 358 Winchester in a Model 7. Does anybody have any info on a 338-284? I figured that a 338-284 should have more going for it than either a 358 or a 338-08 and would have more magazine capacity than the WSM's. If anybody can point me in the right direction or enlighten me regarding the introduction of the 338 WSM I would sure appreciate it. Thanks

My brother just had a 338-284 built. Acording to him it is ballisticly the same as the 338-06. If he doesn't pick up on your post I'll call him and have him reply. He can give more info than I can.

I have a 338-284. Mine is built on a Ruger 77 (older action) short action, with a Pac Nor #1 contour SS Match barrel, Timney trigger in a UL stock. I use 338-06 load data, starting with "starting loads" and working up. I normally hit max pretty close to what the books states as max for the 338-06, normally within .5 grain.

Others have complained of feeding problems with 284 cases, but I have not had one failure to feed, this is a non existent problem in my rifle. The rifle was previously a 308, no modifications were nesc to the feed rails.

I had Pac Nor do the work, took about 12 weeks to get the rifle back. They installed the barrel, which included, the barrel (of course), lapping the lugs, truing the bolt face and squaring the action for $440.

Let me know if you need any more information.

BTW, hkr is my OLDER brother [Big Grin] .

Jim

I have built a couple of 338/284's on Savage M-99 lever actions...They pretty much duplicanted the 338-06...I got a good 2800 with the 210 Noslers but the 250 didn't quite duplicate the 33-06, but were close enough for government work...

It outperformed the 338-08's I built on the same actions by 150 to 200 FPS in most cases..

You can pick up another 100 FPS in a good bolt action...
