I'm thinking about a Weatherby Mk. action with a 28" heavy barrel chambered for the .300 RUM. Has anyone put a custom rifle together with a Weatherby action? The Weatherby action seems to be machined with more care than anything I've seen from Remington or Winchester, my goal is a 150 gr. Failsafe at around 3700 fps that will consistantly hold 5" @ 500 yards.

Chuck's right. There are plenty of good actions out there (he missed Borden (nesika) and Mcmillan). The Weatherby action is needlessly heavy for most applications as the receiver is a one size fits all affair from the 460 down with only a change in the bolt stop grove, bolt face and bottom metal. Unless you already have a Weatherby try one from Chucks list.

Thanks for the info. This will be used as a long range hunting rifle, are there any stocks out there for those type of actions that are designed more like a traditional hunting stock?

Oldfart, I've see, in person, a couple of full-house custom jobs built by the David Miller Company that were based on Weatherby Mark V actions. Beautiful work, but very expensive! Those actions were completely reworked. I think the Mark V action (a great action in most repsects) would be great if you wanted a custom .30-378 (one of my hunting partners has one), but if you want a custom .300 RUM, I'd keep things simple and base it on a Model 700 action that was originally built as a .300 RUM. That way, action work requirements will be minimal, etc. AD

McMillan make a stock for that application. Just get ready to wait four months to get it though. But is a good stock to wait for. You just have to make sure the Bolt throw in the stock is relieved for the bolt to drop properly (from experience). Nesika make a hunter version of their actions that is very light but ridged. I am in the process of makeing two of them now. Chuck T

I have two custom 300ultra mags and went with stainless 700 actions. They are lighter and it is quite easy to lap the lugs unlike the weatherby action. There are also far more stocks available for the 700 action as well as triggers and other accessories.

Just looked on McMillans site and they can inlet several different stocks for Nesika. Also Nesika can make their hunter version so it will fit into a Remington stock. This info came off of their web sites. Chuck T

Check out Borden's site. They have a well designed stock that I've used on two Weatherby's a 358 STA and a 378. Try http://www.rimrockstocks.com/.
