The 338 Rem Ultra in a Sendero will get the job done for you if the buget is tight.

If you are recoil shy put a brake on it.

My opinion but I think the 338 Ultra is every bit as good as the Lapua. We have built 6 of them in light hunting rifles and all of them are shooters (1/2 Moa 3 shots at 200 yards with the right load). We keep the headspace fairly tight and the throat short enough so we can touch the rifling.

If you buy a Sendero single feed it (seat the bullet out to get better accuracy) and I think you will be very happy with the level of accuracy obtained.

The 338/416 Rigby or the 338-378 Weatherby would make a great rifle for your needs. Do you really have rules that limit you to the 300 RUM? Check out some of the articles that Dan Lilja has written about long range shooting. His website is

Someone mentioned also the 408 Chey-Tac, maybe the best sub-50 long range round. You can find some information about it on EDM's website.

There is also some info here:

Have you considered the optics that you will use at these extreme ranges?

I need the help of some people who can answer a question for me, I am looking at trying my hand at some long range shooting (Not hunting just steel plates) and I was curious what everyones thoughts were on which of the following rounds would get me out to 1500 - 1800 yards and still be supersonic? I have my 1000 yard 308 but it well pretty much runs out of steam around 800 - 900 and goes subsonic around 1200 I think, I was looking at either the 300 Win Mag or the 300 RUM both will have muzzle breaks due to the lovely recoil of these cannons, opinions are very welcome, thanks

Interesting post... I just started looking into the same subject myself and ordered (and received) a great book on the subject from Sinclair (I beleive the book was written/published by Prescision Shooting Maazine) "Precision Shooting At 1000 Yds" The cost is about $35 and it is a real interesting read. I've included the web site below.

The book will cover cartridge selection, relaoding tips, etc. The bottom line is that you do not need to go to a 50 BMG or Lapua cartridge to get out to that distance. In fact one of the authprs uses a 308 Ackly Improved. Get the book!
