I have a new Weatherby Vanguard S/S 7 rem.mag. Have shot around 70-80 rounds. I believe I am seeing a pattern that the first 4-6 rounds do not group well at all. I talking 6†@ 100 yards. Then all of a sudden it will start shooting less than 1†groups. This is a hunting gun what am I to do about cleaning as I need 1†group with the first shot. THANKS Jerry

I have never seen such a change from a clean to a fouled barrel. If the rifle were mine,I would fire some fouling shots ,then let the barrel cool fully, sight the gun in,then go hunting. If you must clean the barrel on a hunting trip, fire some more fouling shots before hunting.

If your particular rifle with your particular loads shoots better after 5-6 shots than I'd sugest you clean it very carefully then fire five or six shots into the target backstop and carry the rifle into the woods with a prefouled bore. I've had a couple rifles over the years that liked one or two fouling shots before they "settled" down, it's part of knowing your rifle's particular charistics... Do you have some sort of OCD that requires you to have your barrel at some "Monk-ish" level of cleanliness? As a guess I'd say the barrel isn't "broken in" yet and there is only one way it's going to GET "broken in" you need to shoot it more..... The rifle's preference for a dirty bore will probably fade as it ages. so take your cleaning equipment to the range and alternatly shoot and clean until it's settled in.
