so I have this kimber 84 that I could never get to shoot better than 1 5/8 inches with 180 grn TSXs...which just isn't good enough for me...

I put in a pressure bad and it dropped to about 1 3/8th..

Got the same results with 165 grn TSXs also

I made sure the bbl was floated other than the pressure pad and only got a little better results.

Then I really made sure the bbl was floated other than the pad and voila...

here is what I got...

Best load 44 grns of Varget hornady 165 GMXs .600

Second best 43.8 grns .725

Third best 44.2 grns .925 (no pic)

But the real neat thing is that all 9 shots superimposed on each other print inside of 1.3 inches.

I am now very happy with my light weight mtn rifle weighing 6 3/4 lbs scoped and loaded

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Mike, thanks for the share--I am working on a Kimber 308 (AGAIN) for the 4th time--meaning a Kimber--(only second Kimber 308)

I will spend the time to make sure the barrel is really floated before I do too much else, I've been frustrated again by the inherrent inaccuracy of the Kimbers I have owned...DJPaintless who post here alwasy seems to get them to shoot great, but I realize he's a better 'accuracy smith' than I--and probably a better rifleman in genereal Smiler

I was pretty much done with Kimbers, but got a really pretty wood stocked one on a great trade so I bit the bullet again.....I've been working with near max loads of Varget myself, as I find you need to push the Barnes pills pretty hard for best accuracy in my experience.

Good luck--Don

Good for you Mike,
Sounds like you have a sweet shooter now. Maybe I was lucky but Randi's shot well out of the box. Those light weight 308 Kimbers are great little hunting rifles. Sometimes Randi even lets me borrow hers.

Same for me. I think mine will make a good trot-line weight maybe???

I like it except it is a 2" gun. What do you mean free-floated except for the "pad"? What is the "pad"?

I´m pondering my 308 Win/84 Montana as well.
It is pillar bedded and free floated from factory.

So far the best load is with 150 grn Nosler PT and 150 grn Woodleighs, but even then it is hard to break the 2" with 3 shots.

Is it possible to get a picture of the pad, the size and material used and where you did place it?

It is a dandy little rifle, but I really whish I could make it shoot better, and aboove all the 165 grn bullets.

My #84 shoots real well too.
It shoots 165 grain Hornady Ils real well.
Funny think is I can't remember weather I sighted in with boat tails of flat bases.
Oh well gonna go out tomorow and take 20 of each.
My load is 45 grs of IMR-4064. I get 2740 and around .6 to .75.
