I read in a couple of places that the receiver of Steyr's ProHunter is an alloy and not steel, but I don't find this believable. Can owners of these rifles tell me if it's steel or otherwise? Thank you.

I think the pro hunter is steel but the scout is aluminum to reduce weight.

Correct, but in this context "alloy" is commonly -and erroneously- used to refer to non-ferrous alloys such as aluminium alloys.

I'm curious, since the steel bolt locks into the steel barrel, what difference does it make? Assuming the metal used is rather robust.

Aim for the exit hole

I seem to have read somewhere that the bolt locks into the receiver and not the barrel, but I am working off the top of my head and could be wrong.

Pretty much exactly why I stopped concerning myself too much with the receiver materials. As long as we have steel on steel in the lockup, then the receiver is nothing more than a bolt-tracking mechanism.

What drove my question was a friend had a Browning shotgun that had an aluminum receiver and it worked okay.

Browning BAR has an aluminum receiver and it works just fine. The Steyr Scout receiver is also aluminum. So are the AR10s.
