I got a 31 on my ACT! 338 Lapua Improved to be ordered as soon as my dad gets home!

Hmmm, what about a 338 Edge instead??
Currently shooting a Blaser Tac-2 in 338 Lapua, but got to shoot another guys nicely built edge----very interesting.

Ah DuggaBoye don't go changing my mind now! 338 Lapua Improved has better brass, less case stretch, and most of all looks way cooler.

Hey Tyler, I don't know Beans about an "ACT", but am guessing it must be a Test. If they were around when I was going to school, I just don't remember them. I think we had something called a PSAT, but that could be wrong too.

So, I don't understand 31 as being significantly better than 29. If you could "teach me" about it, I'd appreciate it.

That sounds like quite a Cartridge. I do believe it would achieve my "Adequate Cartridge" status with no problem at all.

Hot Core-The ACT is one of the various college entrance exams. The scores range from 1-36. The national rank for a Composite score of 31 is 98. This means 98 percent of recent high school graduates who took the ACT achieved a Composite score of 31 or below. We took the SAT's.

Well done Tyler on the ACT. One of my grandsons took his first Elk (big cow) when he was 14 with my .338 Lapua. He was also tagged for a Bull, which he managed to miss the next day, his fault, not the rifles. A fine round indeed. Good luck and good shooting.

Degree or Cosine inclinometer??

Pardon my foreign ignorance, but what is an ACT?

ACT is a test you take for college admissions, scored from 1-36. 31 and above is the top 2 percent.

DuggaBoye, didn't think about that, I was thinking bubble level! But yeah I will probably add one of those too...whats the advantage of degree or cosine over the other?

I like Cosine:
(three methods)

With PDA's:

Cosine saves calculation steps from degrees in that you input the cosine number into most ballistic software.

Without PDA's:

Generally accurate, not as accurate as utilizing software.
Multiply the cosine number to MILRAD or MOA data card hold for target distance .

Rough Distance:
Multiply cosine number to Lasered/ optically ranged distance (sloped).


When I initially learned ,we used the:
"Quick (and Dirty) Degree Table" and multiplied in our feeble heads:
15 x .95
30 x .85
45 x .70
(And guessed in between.)

A more accurate Degree Range is :
00..........1
05.......0.99
10.......0.98
15.......0.96
20.......0.94
25.......0.91
30.......0.87
35.......0.82
40.......0.77
45.......0.70

So say I'm shooting at 1000 yards and I'm looking down just a bit. I just took trig but in this summer heat I already forgot much I knew about cosines.

Anyways, I'm shooting 13 degrees downward...whatever that is in cosine. So then how do I do the calculation?

You multiply the range to target by the cosine of the angle of declanation (ie degrees from horizontal). This will give you the true horizontal distance to target which you will dial in on the scope for elevation.

Or you can buy one of the Leupold range finders with a built in inclinometer and it will do the math for you, but I'm not sur eif they punch out to 1000 yds.

Don't sweat the math too much, besides it'll be the wind that beats you up the worst ,not the up/down angle

Congrats big time! Since I was not up to speed on ACT I did a google...average score was 21.1 on ACT and your 31 was like a 2100 SAT

Tyler, CONGRATULATIONS!!! I can tell you from experience that will mean big $$$ savings to your folks at college time. One of my girls scored a 31 and one a 32 and the savings to me was in six figures for college.
