Hello-

I'm interested in hearing what success y'all have had with loading the 300 weatherby down, especially with lighter bullets and full case or nearly full case loads.

Thanks!

I'll make a suggestion that mabey you don't want to hear....

Trade it in on a 30-06?

The magnums often don't respond well to "downloading"

On a similar not as Allan, If you don't like the recoil in a hunting situation then downsize to somethink more your likeing, but if you want to shoot more often and accurately they buy another rifle that suits your taste. Why work on damaging the trought of your weatherby if you can get something like a 308 260 or a 223 to do the job you want done?
I've got a 300wsm and was working on the same thing before I realized how much I liked to shoot it. I just purchased a 22-250 to burn up barrels with instead of my big game rifle. I simply used hornady 110 grain bullets and a starting charge of varget or h380. you can really notice the recoil difference when you pop in a 180 accubond after shooting a few zingers.

No offense meant, I'm sure someone here will be able to help you with a reduced load.

My manual says to use SR 4759 Red load and a 100 grain for the 300 wby yealding about 1650-1920 fps.

Allan-

Thanks
I know of the issues around downloading bottleneck magnums.
This is why I ask to hear about the success stories from this group of shooters and handloaders.

My interest in this comes up from a conversation I had with the best friend of my wife's late grandfather, who died last year.
These two old guys had often spoken about reloading for this cartridge, and figured that there was likely *some powder* that'd work with lighter bullets for reduced loads.

Thought I'd ask here and see if y'all knew of something...

Britz-

I'm not recoil shy at all.
My coastal game rifle is a 458 running 350snrn hornadys at 2400+ fps
I have a couple of 16bore double rifles that I shoot quite a bit too.
I have a nice accurate little 308 precision rifle, got a couple really accurate 223 rifles, got the 30-30 lever guns...

This is just around the interest of handloading light loads for the 300 weatherby.
Not much more than that.

As mentioned, lighter bullet, the 130TSX comes
to mind, should be considered. I had a 300WBY which, actually 2, that I just had to load to the max. Got rid of them because of the recoil in just shooting, I like to burn powder. I remember fire forming a couple of boxes of 300H&H and how nice is was to shoot for just pure fun. Felt like a 30/06. Even went Elk hunting with the H&H ammo. Never occured to me to load it down to H&H levels. I really liked the rifles. Same thing with my 44 mag S&W with a 4" barrel; 22gr of 2400 is too much where 19gr is much more pleasant than Keiths load. It will still do anything I need it to do, above that I will use my 405 Winchester.

Start at 48gr of H4895 with your favorite 150gr bullet and work up for accuracy.

I was looking at the data for 125gr bullets in Nosler # 6 for the 300Wby and that is alot of powder 80 plus gr and that be alittle more than I want to try with my 300Wby. The old Lymann # 45 had some data with 110gr bullets max at 3900/3500fps and they had some cast bullet loads. Well good luck

Tom covered it pretty well... Lymann has cast bullet data which would certainly be considered a reduced load... Might want to give that a look see Wink...

Thanks guys.

I'll dig out my 45th edition and take a look at those cast bullet loads.
I wonder if they're even near full case...
