Need a little more advice please. I've settled on using a ruger #1 action for my little project. Can anyone suggest a good place to look for a barreled 1A action? I can find the 1B actions in 06 or 300wm but no luck in 1A. I've been keeping my eye on auction arms and gunbroker but so far..zilch in a 30cal 1A. Thanks Boomer

A Ruger No 1 in a 9,3 caliber... I would go for .360 no 2 N.E because the cartridge are so sexy A more mainstream choise would be the 9,3x74R But why not a 9,3x63 -necked down 10,75x68 case, same performance as 9,3x64 and .375 H&H but 10 years older (introduced around 1902-05) Or the Power House 9,3x70 (necked down .404 Jeffery case) The choise is yours Husky

I'm pretty much settled on a 9.3 x 74. Need to start assembling the parts. Can #1 actions be purchased separately and if so where? Otherwise it looks like trying to find a barreled action and then having it re-barreled

Depends in part on how deep your wallet is. You might consider just getting a Ruger No. 1-V in .30-06 and having the barrel rebored & rechambered. That way you don't have to pay for either new barrel or new stocks immediately. The heavier barrel of the No. 1-V will, of course, end up lighter than the original factory gun when the re-boring is done, and will be plenty light to carry, with a little less recoil due to the slightly heavier weight than a factory "S" model. Barrel will be a hair shorter than 24" and it is no big deal to cut it back a couple more inches than that, if the 22" barrels of the "A" or "AB" are attracting you. Then, if it doesn't end up shooting so well you just can't bring yourself to change it, you can add a higher grade barrel sometime in the future, and at even some other time, perhaps re-stock it... Now that I am retired and on pension(s), if I wasn't doing the work myself that's probably how I would approach it. Best wishes, and good luck...hope it turns out great for you. Alberta Canuck

Boom, Mr. Canuck is right on the money on this. I started gathering the materials for a simular project. Have purchased a Browning 1885 Highwall in 06. Have been back & forth between 35 Whelen and 9.3x62. To either of these its a short step to rebore and rechamber from the 06. There's no magizine work to be done on a single shot. The 9.3x70 sounds interesting but I am not getting any younger. Good luck.
