I am going to re-barrel a commercial Mauser action to 30-06. 3.36 mag length. Going in a Boyds JRS stock. Deer hunting gun - mostly from blinds. Maybe one more trip out west.
Looking to get 2800+ fps from a 165 grain bullet with out pushing the pressure limits.
Should I go with a 22",23" or 24" barrel?
Planning on using a Shilen barrel - what contour - 2,3,4.
Thinking of 24" #3 contour at the moment.

your thoughts?

You should be able to get that vel. with a 22" barrel.

I built a 25-06 on a Fn Mauser action/26" Douglas SS #4 barrel/Boyds JRS Lam stock/4.5-14X Burris. That rig goes 10.5 lbs.

Another FN Mauser action in 8X64s/25.5"Douglas SS #3 barrel/ Boyds JRS Lam./B&L 1.5-6X goes 10.4 lbs.
But with a Ramline Mauser stock goes 8.9 lbs.

It just depends on what you weight you want to end up with.

From a blind, 24," contour doesn't much matter since it won't be carried. A #3 would be a good compromise for a rig that may be carried some.

The Laminate JRS is a heavy stock, a light #2 would make for lousy balance during offhand shooting.

I get 2800fps w/o a problem using 4350 with a 22" barrel.
22", 24", I think the difference is really between folk's ears. I hunted with both and even 26" and as far as handiness or agility in the woods, couldn't tell a difference.
IMO, I'd set it up to carry. You can do some good work with a sporter rifle from a stand but lugging around a semi-bench rest rifle would be a pain.

I have a 30/06 that I've carried all over the mountains and if I ever build another one it would be just like it. Mine has a 22" barrel that is the same contour as a Win M70 Featherweight. I shoot pretty much exclusively 180 grain Sierra BT's and get just under 2800 fps with it with 56 grains of IMR-4350, mine is in a factory Win laminate stock and with a Leupold VX-II 3-9 it weighs exactly 8 pounds 2 ounces.

Thanks for the replys

I am going with a 24" #3 Shilen
I can have it shortened later if need be.

May go with a lighter stock.

For a stand gun it doesn't really matter, but I had a #3 Shilen on an 09 argentine and I felt it was way too heavy.

It was very accurate.

Agreed.....I far prefer #2 and even #1 contour.

I shoot and reload 30'06 from many years and find that it can give great results also with 22" barrel. If your goal is to push 165g bullets at 2800 fps, you don't need nothing more then a 22" barrel. I shoot at 2870 fps 165g Nosler bullets with my Remington 700 BDL.
Of course if you're looking to more speed to shoot at longer range, 2" longer barrel will help you.
My choise would be 22-23" #3...
