Finally, got to take my new match grade 308 Win barrel that I got from Tip Burns, to the range.
I have fired a total of 40 rounds through the barrel. The last 10 at the target below. 100 yards off bags. If I hadn't jerked the 2nd shot it could have been one ragged hole!

Round was a reload of once fired Federal Match brass, FL sized. CCI Benchrest primers, 45 grains of Norma 203B pushing a 168 grain Nosler HPBT Factory 2nd. The scope is a Vortex 6.5 X 20 I bought from Cameralandny.com

Sunday I will give it a try over on the 300 yard range!

Sunday 1/23/2011
Peggy and I braved the cool temps and gusty South Easterly winds to throw a few rounds down range at 300 yards.

After the first 4 sighters in the upper left I adjusted and DFLed the X ring with 3 rounds. Then shot 4 more.
These all were off a wooden shooting bench on a Caldwell Sled. Lots to learn about reading the wind, but I am still excited about possibilities of this rifle and barrel! Next up a Bipod and a shooting mat.YEEHAAW!

Alf,
I have an Arabesque base. I have two "African" barrels. A 375 H&H and a 404 Jeffery. My third barrel is a match grade 308 Win.

The Arabesque barrel channel is larger for the "African" barrels. I have had no issues using a borrowed standard 308 barrel or the heavier match grade on my base.

From the start I have been impressed with the "return to zero" of my rifle. The three barrels I have shoot a lot better than I do!

Downside is you have to use "Mauser M03" stuff.
Barrels, bolt faces, magazines, scope mounts and bases are all Mauser.

I am always on the lookout for a deal on a barrel!

If I had it to do all over again, I would still buy the M03. There a a variety of models to choose from. I purchased mine from Tip Burns at Canyon Sporting Arms

Hi! My name is Rusty! I'm a 404 Jeffery/ 450/400 3 inch-aholic.

I own 2 404 Jeffery rifles. One of two custom 404 Jeffery Rifles on a Montana Rifle co. long action that Tip Burns and John Valicek put together for me. I gave one to my friend David Guitar. I bought the Mauser M03 this year with the 404 Jeffery barrel. I own one vintage British Double rifle an A. Hollis and Son,Leonard made, in 450/400 3 inch.

I have to admit I really like the 404 Jeffery load it load it down it is fun to shoot!

Those hundred yard groups are plenty good enough.... What's your impression of the Vortex?

As my first long range scope, I like the small target dot. I can still see the edges of the X ring at 20 power.
