I just aquired an old (built in '50 I think) all oringinal Winchester M-70 .300 H&H. Getting ready to load up some shells for it. I guess I am gonna have to buy some of that expensive Nosler brass for it as I can't find anything else. Am gonna load 180 gr Barnes TSX in it. Does anyone have a favorite load for this old round? Trying to decide what powder to try first. Was hoping Ray would respond as I think he is fond of this cartridge.

I have had great luck with 165 grain Hornady's spitzers and 69.5 grains or so of H4831.

That cartridge and powder, both, have been around a long, long time. That would be a good place to start.

I really want to shoot 180 gr TSX in it. Got any powder suggestions for that?

Yup. 71gr RL-22 CCI-250 primers and either WW or RP cases. Right at 3010 fps out of a pre-war 26" Model 70 and very accurate. jorge

IMO the 300 H&H is ideally suited to the larger bullet.....the 200 grain premiums are incredible.....and pushed along by H-4831 or either IMR or H-4350 works too!

Getting 3,000 from the 200 provides a very flat arch for a long ways......and the result:.....dead Kudu every time!

65 grains of RL22 behind a 200grn Nosler Partition. I clocked it at 2850fps out of a M70.

You will love that gun! Try 68 or 69 graains of IMR 4350 with 180 gr. bullet. The Sieera pro hunter is very accurate. You will be in the 3000 FPS area. Enjoy!

Go ahead and take advantage of that 26" barrel. I have been very happy with IMR 7828 and Nosler's 200 grain accubond.

A number of years ago I switched from the 180 Nosler to the 200 gr. Nosler and a cup full of old Army Surplus 4831 and got 3000 FPS plus a little more. I had 150 pound SS keg, today I have about 10 lbs left...I have used that load and the same with a 220 Woodleigh for years.

I suspect you could get within a 100 FPS with p H or IMR 4831, IMR-7828. You might even equal my load with Norma MRP if you can find it.

I reserve the 180 Nolser for my 30-06 with a casefull of the same...

Don't forget, the TSX is the most heavily advertised bullet on the market . . . and it should be. Shoot a TBBC, partition, or something/anything that works. I'm no fan of TSX.

Lane,

I stumbled onto an older Guild-makers 300 H&H Mauser that I will likewise use the 180 grain TSX to sight in/work up with.

And probably like you, I am using the TSX bullets because nothing else appraoches them in my rifles in terms of accuracy.

I'm starting with RL-19, and might even try RL-22 if I don't see the velocities I am hoping for.

RL-19 is superb for the 180 grain bullets in the 300 H&H.
However, my ultimate goal to make my final load with the Barnes MRX bullet.
For me, they are too pricey to experiment much with, so I'll do the load development with the TSX first.
You might be pleasantly surprised by the MRX.

It seems to highlight the difference in SD, that some scoff at.

Northfork makes a 200 grainer that is of heavier construction that its 180 grain equivalent; intended for bigger & heavier game, such as for elk and up, or the bigger African plains game, such as eland. The Swift Bullet Company also makes an equally good 200 grain Swift A-Frame bullet. The latter one just becomming available now in SA. Then there are the more common ones in SA; the Woodleighs, Stewarts & Rhinos. The Woodleigh bullet has thinner walls than our loaclly made Stewart bullet, and as such, is a tougher bullet, less likely to over expand at higher velocities. Ken Stewart uses some tin in the mix for his jacket material rather than the standard 90/10 gilding material. Due to lack of marketing, many people do not know about Ken's custom premium bullets.
