My father-in-law is wanting to sell his JC Higgins Model 50 30-06 (FN Mauser action). It is not factory: Claro Black Walnut stock, professionally checkered, Timney trigger, Buehler mounts and rings (not pictured), no irons, reblued. I'd appreciate some ideas on value. Thanks, Alan.

put it at internet auction with minimum bid of $400 and sell to the highest bidder.

sadly all those custom adds don't appreciably add to the resale. This gun is worth a lot more than they bring.

This is a truly fine rifle and in actual use the equivalent to the M-70 rifle but won't bring the same cash. They are great bargains when we find them.....There's one at a gun shop a few muiles away that can be had for $365 and it has a Redfield 4X on it.

Thank you Sir. It is indeed a fine rifle. I like everything about it except for the southpaw wing safety.

Alan R,

Very nice rifle. Actually, I am a right handed shooter and prefer the safety on the left. Very natural for me to take off the safety with my thumb as it wrap around the pistol grip.

I alway thought the safetys on the right side are cumbersome.

that safety, oddly enough, is worth about $70-$80 on an Ebay auction. If you double that and add a few bucks more you can put a nice Dakota 3 position on the Rifle and keep it.

I would certainly give you $400 bucks for it the way its described.

Just an FYI...I am not the one selling the rifle. It belongs to my Father-in-Law. He, computers and picture posting do not mix :^)

Alan R,

This rifle is one that is commonly recommended on this site, so you are asking the right folks. I agree about the auction. You could even put it up for sale in Classified here. I expect it will sell promptly.

Have you asked your f-i-l what he wants to get for it? I would probably go $500 from the photos.

I saw a couple of higginns 06,s in the vancouver washington area, (thats right across the columbia river from Portland Or.) One was kind of rough but could easily be polished up, It had a set of tally bases and was going for 230.00, and the other was in prety good shape and was going for I think 290.00.
But the one in the picture looks alot better than either of those.
There is a big gunshow in portland this weekend and of corse Im, going, if I don't blow my cash reservs at the show,I will probably go back to the store where I found the rough one.

Seafire...I did mention something to the fact that a loving F-I-L would simply give the rifle to his favorite S-I-L. He said he would be more than happy to give it to me for the right price Big Grin Seriously, he is selling a few rifles to help fund his guided elk/muley hunt this November. HunterJim...he feels the rifle is worth $500-600. I have waffled back and forth myself about buying it. I probably should...but doing so means having to make room in the safe myself.

He's pretty close there.

The auction will bring that IMO. If I didn't have a pair of 30-06 now I'd make you an offer.

I have a Higgins action here and also one of the better older Mark X actions. In my mind, if you get one of the good Mark X actions they are just as good, if not better, to build on. Almost exactly the same action with better bottom metal.

Plus, some of the Mark X actions came with a factory "speed-lock", with about a 30-40% faster lock-time according to Kuhnhausen.

Still, I regret having sold my brand new unfired Higgins 30-06 for $300 two years ago. Would have been great for a re-barreling project I am now commencing.
