I dropped by my local walmart and found a SALE on factory loaded Fed Premium ammo. I bought 10 boxes, loaded with 180gr partitions, all the same lot number, for $9.00 a box. Since I do not have a chrono, I was wondering what kind of velocity I will be getting out of a standard Ruger MKII with 22" barrel. Anyone care to make an estimate? I have and still do reload for a 30-06, so even if they are not very accurate in my rifle I can pull the bullets and use the brass. Just wondering what speed I might be getting. Thanks for looking.

Actual chronograph readings should run about 2,600 feet/sec or so. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." My guess would be closer to 2,700fps, their High energy round with the 180gr Trophy bonded bullet has been chronoed at 2,900+ fps i know that they are two completly different rounds but i couldnt see a 300fps difference.

I have seen the Federal Premium 180's clock as high as 2780 FPS out of a 22" barreled 06 and as low as 2600 FPS it just depends on the individual rifle........The High Energy rounds that I have seen Chrono'ed were running around 2880 FPS with 180 Partions...... _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill

Thanks for the replys men. I live near a small town (somewhat less than 10K pop.) and know the wmt store manager quite well. He gave me a "heads-up" on the sale, so I was standing at the counter when it started. Thanks again.......

Last time I ran any over the chrono out of a 22 inch M700 they were doing something in the mid 2600s. Back in 1997 Federal High Energy 180s - Partitions and Bearclaws - clocked in the low 2900s in two different stock M700s and were a completely different beast at the bench. The regular premiums shot under an 1-1/2 inches, the HEs ran 3-4 inches shooting with a fixed 4x.

The HE's shoot 1.25" for 5 shots in my Rem 700 of first year production. I get the same performance out of my Husky and Win 70 (pre 64). It has been my load of choice for everything larger than Florida deer. My son took a nice elk at a measured 300 yds with the Husky. One shot through the lungs and a followup just for insurance. I'll find someone with a chrono (I hope) and see what the rounds will do. However, if I can't locate a chrono in my area, I'm still quite confident they will do just fine for the deer and elk I hunt annually. Thanks again men. Great site this!

Even tho the "Premium" and "HE" are different animals, Federal didn't produce junk ammo. I'd make any necessary sight changes and be happy.
