I am putting together a 338-06 rifle from parts and would like an estimate of the all in weight when finished. The parts will be a pre-64 Win Fwt barreled action ('06 bored to 338), McMillan GH Fwt stock, leupold Vari X III 3.5X10X50AO scope in medium talley QD rings and mounts. Also the added weight if std 24" pre-64 barrel were used. Estimates are certainly welcomed and I am hoping we will be just over 8lbs?
More like 9 lbs when you take it hunting. I myself would ditch that 3.5-10x 50 for a fixed 4x or 6 x but that just me. I have a 26 inch barreled Coswell in a walnut stock, a 318 WR wears a 4x leupold and that rife weights just 7 lbs maybe a tad over. 338-06 is just an updated 318 WR. For some reason these days people over scope rifles that are ment to be carried for weeks and when a shot at say an elk comes will be at around 50 yards or so in the Tall Timber. And still you will be able to see the target well enough to take a 400 yard shot if need be. Its your rifle set it up the way you like.

If you still want a variable scope, but want to keep the rifle slim and light try the Leupold 2.5x8 or their 1.75x6. These smaller scopes fit much better in a saddle scabbard.

I appreciate the input and yes, the scope could be a way to drop 6 oz or so of the weight. I certainly do not want it to exceed 8 1/2 - 8 3/4. I had the scope available and may rob one off another rifle to use on this if it gets too heavy. This is the only 50 objective in twelve or so and I need to give it a try. Actually my fav scope is the Leo MX8 6X42 and the Leo 1.5X6E for the big bores.
That scope should be around 14oz. Luepold lists weights.Another 4 maybe for rings and bases Brown rifle stocks lists action weights and Lilja has a barrel weight calculator. Sound like 9 and some change just guessing. I just did the same thing.
I would prefer a lighter rifle in this chambering and would not use the P-64 action although I prefer it for the .338 Mag. IF, you can find one, the HVA 4000-4100 action makes about the nicest, light .338-06 I have ever seen; I just don't see any point in a heavy rifle in that chambering. I would also recommend finding one of the smallring FNs as used by Browning for some .243 and .308 rifles, that would be ideal, IMO.

If you drop to a VXIII2.5x8 & lighter mounts you might make 8.5#, a but heavier if you use a std. P64 bbl. contour. I have a post64 M70 in a very trim walnut stock, Leup. 3-9comp., slim ft.wt. 23"bbl. It comes in @ 7.3# (.280). Great caliber choice. My own .338-06 is on a tang safety Ruger in a laminated stock. med. 22.5"bbl. it is a bit heavy, right at 8.5# w/ a VXIII2.5x8.

Kutenay, I just gave away my Husky to a daughter who actually like to hunt. I told her when I gave it to her that it was one of my favorites - but it was still a very good shooter in 270. They are really great and if one looks can be found at fairly reasonable prices. I just have this pre 64 sitting around that needs to go hunting is why I was using it for this project.
fredj, I think you are correct that I can get down below 9lbs with a change in scope. Actually when I put the numbers together I am already close to 8 1/2 with this scope. This assumes the McM stock is not over 2 1/2lb. Yes, I have one of those Rugers in the tang safety model, a 35 Whelen and they are a little heavy but I really like mine and it shoots great.
I think a pre-64 is a perfect action for a 338-06. If you want it lightish, go with a FW action, barrel, and bottom metal; if you can handle and extra pound or so, go with a standard barrel, action, and bottom metal.
I'm having one put togther right now a classic CRF model 70. In a mcmillan stock and a 1.5-4.5x Nikon, it will weight (with scope and sling) in at about 8.5 lbs. Plenty light enough for me...
