Plus P Loads for 7 X 57 Mauser

Hello
I am having a Win. Mod. 770 30-06 rebarreled to 7X57 Mauser. Reading the manuals the 140 gr. bullet appears to be, IMHO, loaded down. I imagine due to the number of (old) military rifles available. Are there modern day loads that would take full advantage of modern bolt action rifles and newer powders?
Thankx
Dick

pick up the newest speer manual. it makes the 175 grainers more than worthwhile in the caliber.

Ihave a factory Model 70 Feathrweight that is chambered in 7mm Mauser...

For deer season, I load it with 44 grains of IMR 4895 and a 140 grain ballistic tip that gives an MV of 2800 fps in the 22 inch barrel..

I have a couple of Rugers also chambered in this caliber... out of the older Hornady Manual, I got a load of 40 grains of IMR 3031 for bullet weights of 175 grains...

these two rifles are very finicky for accuracy.. and are long throated...

however seating any bullet out to magazine length and the charge of 40 grains of 3031, any load with them is sub MOA accurate with good velocity...

Hornady's manual says with the 175s I should be getting 2400 fps or so.. however the Rugers are giving me 2600 fps with the 175s and this load......Even with the lighter 139 grainers I am still getting about 2700 fps...

this load doesn't vary much with the extreme bulet weights and has proven very accurate in both rifles..

on the other hand, the Winchester is a tack driver, with whatever you feed it...

Hummmm, 7X57, one of my favorite subjects! I got my first 70 FW in the mid '80's and found excellent loads with 130 Speer Hot Cores utilizing H-4895, IMR-4064, plus IMR-4320 in the mid 2700 fps. IMR-4350 sends the 139 grain Hornady over 2700 fps and MR-3100 paired with 154 Hornady or 160 Speers 2600 fps. Later aquired a M.98 Sporter 7X57 and found these loads did as well in it but, have standardized with 154 Hornady or 150 Nosler, both Solid Base and Partitions, and IMR-4350 at 2674 fps. In fact, the last elk I killed was with this load and it seemed to work just as well as anything else I've used. Just a 30 yard tracking job to my dead elk. Smiler
I had some Remington 150 PCL that would not shoot in either rifle better than 3-4 MOA with any powder I tried. Seafire2 recommended the 40 grain 3031 load, which I tried and was pleasently surprised when the first 10 groups averaged 1.36". Big Grin

a load I like alot is 50 grains of H-414 under a 140 grain balistic tip. I shoot one hole groups and well over 2800 fps, in my Ruger #1A. I think you can go a little faster safly but i would start at say 48.5. My rifle has a long throat , and I seat way out there. With 160s I like RL-19

Just for the heck of it, I loaded some 175 grain hornady spire points into some 7mm-08 cases with a little less than maximum of what is in the book. H4350, I think. I got about 2475 fps out of a 20 inch barrel. Didn't test for accuracy.

i am loading 175 grain hornady round nose bullets with RL22. worked up to the speer max on 175s, which is 51.0 grains, and have gone past that by just a hair. rifle is a ruger no.1. am getting two holes touching, then a flyer that opens the group to just over about 1.1". think the flyer is on the first shot of each group. been trying to keep my hold on the rifle standard on all shots, cradling the forearm with my hand above the sandbag. probably something more wrong with my posture than with the gun. it repeats itself.

i really like the blunt nosed 175s on deer and whatever else. like hunting with a buick.

my ruger has wild variations with different bullets at similar weights. the 175 speer mag tip has a point of impact about 4" from the 175 hornady. and much more with a barnes 150 tsx. i have to keep a lot of notes when shooting the rile and highlight my last load and sight setting at the end of each session.

You have to be careful with this one due to varying throat lengths. With the long throats it is pretty much identical to a .280, with 140's at 2950, 160's at 2750. In a short throated rifle, these loads would be way too hot. Use H414 and RL19 pretty much exclusively in the 7x57, someday I will experiment with some Ramshot Hunter with 160's.

I am not aware of any factory load made in USA that reaches the full potential of the 7X57mm Mauser cartridge when it is used in a modern, strong action and loaded to the same pressure levels as a 6mm Remington or .270 Win.

I have four 7X57mm's at present. One is a Ruger M77, one a Ruger 1A, one a M1924 Venezuelan Mauser (a M98 type), and the othger is a Mannlicher Schoenauer. The first three will fire a 140-grain bullet at 2950-3000 FPS with a max load of WW760 or H414 powder. These three will also drive a 160-grain bullet at around 2800 FPS using IMR 4350, and 175-grainers at 2700 using RE 22 or Norma MRP1. The Mannlicher Schoenauer is around 100 FPS slower with the same loads than these others because it has a 20" barrel. The Rugers j=have 22" tubes that look identical in every way, and the Venezuelan has a 23" barrel.

I love that old caliber and it will do anything the 30-06 will do and thats no slight praise.

I use good modern Mausers and load only H414 in my "long throated Mauser" that way I can load them to 06 length in those magazines...It will duplicate the .280 by doing this if that is what one wants...
