I just bought a Remington Classic 8x57 JS Mauser. Seemed it might fill a gap in my armory (in my mind only). Just seemed like a great example of the Remington 700.

I don't see the 22 LR on your list.

There is nothing on earth more popular, more versatile or more underrated.

For 130 years the lowly 22 LR has proven that utility trumps piss poor design. Plus, it has outlived several "improved versions" of rimfires. Like the alligator, it is a living dinosaur that is so perfectly suited for its environment it had no real need to change.

There may be a few who walk among us that did not learn firearm safety and marksmanship with a 22 LR but I bet those individuals are few and far between.

Best thing I've read in this thread so far.

Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

And I like new carts. The more the merrier.
But, its the rifle that makes the cart for me .

I would consider banning anyone/anything that had the word Dakota, RUM,Ruger, Nosler , Ackley Improved attached to the name of the cartridge.

I would only make an exception for Aaron Neilson as he shoots lions with a .375 RUM as he needs the firepower.

Further I would require a scorecard for the cartridges that have an "x" in the designation. I am lost on this silly metrics.

Further, until someone comes out with a ".300 Old Guy". , I remain a curmudgeon.

Interesting. I cut my teeth with a 270 and was able to get a 222 for my son's 11th birthday. Then he upgraded to my 270 a few months later, still 11. He wanted a good hartebeest gun and shot the old pre-64 270 with its hard butt. (No recoil pad.)

So--
I was glad to see the 270 on the oldies but goodies list. I was only surprised to see the venerable 338 Win Mag (1958) skipped over for the long-action 340 Weatherby (1963).

You have to love the 338. My son and I both think of it as an extremely practical, easy-handling, plains game rifle, certainly a candidate for great all-around plains game, even though it has made its name in North America. As a standard-length action, the 338WinMag basically does what the 375 does, and that is a lot, but in a lighter rifle. Mix the two and split the difference and you get the new guy on the block, the 375 Ruger. patriot Sorry for the offense to some.

Yes the 338 Win Mag should be there as well as the 300 H&H, the 500 Jeffery and the 505 Gibbs. But a good list just the same

Ray,

Guess I'm another one of the "deplorables". I got an 8 mm that has you beat. Ye old 8x50R Austrian, a 244 grn bullet out of a 25" barrel at a whooping 2150 fps..but inside about 125 yds, it is the Hammer of Thor Big Grin

Esskay,
Id bet that's a dandy rifle..Im guessing a single shot hopefully but if not who cares, it has to be nice....

My 8x57 is a Austrian 98 mauser, 8x57, 22 inch solid rib barrel with iron sights in the rib. It is a Manlicher, lean and mean stock of European walnut, pretty gun..shoots great. I have used the Speer 150 gr. SPBTs on deer and its a hammer..The 200 gr. Nosler on PG and an elk, its still a hammer..

I like the 8x57, its as good but no better than a 30-06 and that's high praise..

I am also a curmudgeon and a deplorable, except I just purchased a 300 WSM and a 6.5 Creedmoor. So that takes me off of the curmudgeon list. Does that still leave me on Hillary's list of deplorables ?

Where is the Newton's cartridges? Charles and Roy had a need to change so they could be talked over at the Country Clubs.

The real purpose for all these different cartridges is JOBS. People has to buy the latest rifles, so they crank out the new stuff. Just think of the job security for all the starving GUNSMITHS AND manufacturing workers.

A good salesman could talk you guys into buying the latest pickups, so who not the same on guns.

The 6.5X54MS and other MS cartridges were performers in a fantastic rifle.

1903 to 1910 I guess.

Swampshooter--may you enjoy many days with your new rifles!

Myself--I can understand the Creedmore for lots of long-range target shooting, but animals can be tough. I like to tweak things to bigger where I can--like moving up to a 7-08 in a fast-twist barrel, maybe giving it a bit (1/8") of freebore and as much magazine length as possible. Some of the best long-range bullets require single-loading. But in simplicity when wanting a light/small caliber, I just borrow my wife's 270, it's a shooter in a walnut-stocked Tikka. And 270 is on most people's all-time, all-around lists.
So does my wife qualify as a bonafide curmudgeon even without joining AR? Smiler
