Last Friday when I was getting ready for a hunt on saturday, I picked up a box of Winchester 220 gr silvertips I had bought last year for my 300 WM.
When I pulled one round out of the box I noticed there was a crack in the neck of the case all the way to the shoulder. The bullet was loose and could be removed by hand with no effort.
After checking all the rounds I found two more with the same defect. I took Norma ammo instead and left this box home.
Has anyone ever seen this kind of defect on factory ammo ?
Is it safe to use the remaining ammo from this box?
What do you think might have caused this ?

I would really like to hear from you.

Cheers,
N. Rodrigues

I've seen it. The cases were not annealed properly before being loaded. They will not be dangerous to fire, but water can seep in, making them fire very inconsistently, AND, do not expect them to be accurate! I'd just pull all the bullets, dump the powder on the grass, fill them with water to kill the primers, then crush the cases with a pair of pliers, and throw them away! If you're a reloader, or know any reloaders, save the bullets. They're O.K.!
