Austin HunterRecommendations for 338 Lapua Action for custom build?
A friend wants to build a 338 Lapua from scratch and needs some recommendations on actions.

Austin HunterThanks! Those are the same two vendors that my friend and I narrowed it down to. Glad we are on the same page.
Recommended stocks?

It's forgotten for anything but a sporter. For a proper super precision 338 Lapua the CZ is not in the conversation. Even for a Sporter I would take the Stiller. For target maybe the Lawton. It all depends what you want out of the rifle. The Lapua is a precision looong way round and should be built around a precision action and barrel combo to get the most out of it. These 2 actions should require little if no smith work at all. They should be spot on that is what you are paying for with the custom action. The 5 round mag is neat and you can get a 3 round for a less military look."
Suit yourself, but you asked for it.

youngoutdoorsYou can get a mag for an ADL style stock from Stillers if you don't want the big drop mag. I am currently building a Ultra Mag on a Stiller Tac 338 action for a long range hunting rifle. God Bless, Louis

Actually I shot down the 550 as a good idea for a Lapua. Austin Hunter had nothing to do with it.
Correct, I had a problem with my post, and I should of looked it over better before I submitted it. My appoligies to Austin Hunter.

BuliwyfRemington M700 is hard to beat for this application.

tsurifleguyI would check out the Surgeon XL action. Have seen some of thier rifle in action and they are great guns.

Idaho SharpshooterIf you are not a top 10% long range target shooter of some national repute you will never shoot well enough to see the supposed advantages of a custom action. The military sniper rifles in magnum calibers are 700 Remmies.
The others you mentioned are at their best being shown off at a rifle match in the case. The "my dog's bigger than your dog" syndrome. Look up the record holders and see what they shoot. That's the group to talk to, not the "Armchair Experts" you get here.
JMHO, like everyone else's here...

Okay, but you've got 1/3 of the posts on this thread, and your posts on this thread constitute 5.6% of your total posts to date.

P.S. it's called a paragraph.

jeffeossoi stilkl recomend the cz550 action, and you may disregard it. its a valid reco, and a valid denial .
btw, i have quite a few more than 6k posts .. AND i contribute to the real world of shooting sports, as does ISS ... don't let your preconceptions get in the way valification.
though you wanted a "serious" long range rig, you wouldn't waste your time with anything short of a bmg . and if you did, a 408 cheytac would be reasonable .. which, of course, means a 416 rigby with a proper barrel and bullets would do .. on a CZ.
I frequently see CZs, right from the factory, at 1/2 MOA ... and that's not even bedded or custom ammo ... bedded, good trigger, and good ammo, you should find 1/4 MOA from that kind of loose claw actions ..
and there aint a measurable number of people that can shoot a big bore in the 2's

Tyler KempOr 375 Cheytac? Or anything with high BC bullets going fast? 50's don't dominate anymore..
Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too!
Recent college grad, started a company called MK Machining where I'm developing a bullpup rifle chassis system.

robthomI have seen the "big Sako", TRG-42 long range target - sniping rifles at Bisley (= UK Camp Perry). I think these things, without telescopic sights etc, sell for circa £2500 UK Sterling. They are used by a number of countries as their long range sniping system.
Maybe an idea? Sako rifles are known for their accuracy. Then there is the Accuracy International from the UK. This is available in .338 Lapua and is one of the UK military's long range sniping systems. Or there is the Sauer, the Alpine etc.

I agree with you completely!!!! The CZ action is a superb platform for a custom rifle and they can be purchased for a reasonable price from Brownell's.

Idaho SharpshooterAHR has one under construction as we fret over suitability; on a CZ action. Repeater, even. $4495 ready to go.

PeglegIf it were me I would go with a BAT action. The best out there. JMHO
The only easy day is yesterday!
For a .338 Lapua Build I would look at;
Surgeon XL
Stiller
Lawton 8500
BAT HRPIC
Badger M2008 Lapua Action
And yes a cz 550 wil make a nci,e .338 Lapua.
I would also look into the new .338 Norma magnum, I am having one done on the surgeon XL action. It will fit s 300 SMK into the AICS mags no dramas with the bullets eated in the right place.

wpsuthTwo suggestions:
1. Dakota 76 action; and,
2. Bring your wallet.

N E 450 No2IF I was going to get a 338 Lapua I would get a Blaser Tactical LRS.
That way when I wore the barrel out, I could attach a new one in less than a minute....

Fish30114The TRG 42 is the most straight forward way to go, and will give you superb accuracy right out of the box as well. It has an awesome 2 stage trigger, and high capacity mags are available. Accessories like muzzle brake, flash supressor and cusom bi-pod are available, the barrel comes threaded with a cap on it...the Sako bi-pod is pricey though, I just put a Harris in the forward swivel sling on mine....
Having said that, I have two Surgeon rifles, they are damn fine actions, both of mine have Jewell triggers and Krieger barrels, shoot as good as anything I've seen, and are good looking sporter style rifles, wiht a little 'tactical flair' to them. The TRG is a straight up 'tactical' piece.
