Hey Mike. You know I'm most fond of a 7X57 round. But, if a really nice rifle deal came up in 8X57, I would not pass on it. Just one con:
crbutler got it right, not much bullet selection for reloading.

Damn autocorrect converted Ziess to Swiss.

Why I like the blaser platform - all these barrels are so well built and bed perfectly. I just take a scope of one rifle and in 5 seconds slap it on another and I need I shot and adjustments to get it zeroed at 100 yards.

I have a 7x57 in ruger number 1. I killed a deer with it last year.

I have a 270 on order in a blaser k95 attaché.

But if I get more guns it will be in 6.5 creedmoor. And they will be threaded for suppressed use.

I like the 30/06 - 8mm family.

the whole 338/9.3 range does little for me.

Then I like 375h&h and 375 ruger family and I find little use for everything above it.

But that is just me. And today I got 200 match 200 grain 8x57 PPU at $15 a box - will be fun to shoot the 8mm.

Definitely would consider buying a .375 H&H if I ever take the trip to Africa. Not sure though, less hassle to rent.

I still want a .338 Fed in a custom just because, no real need. Same with a 7mmSTW. Depends on the looks of the rifle. That comes first.
I'm definitely covered for anything from hogs to mule deer with what I have now. I only hunt a few times a year.
* = ones I use most for hunting.

1. Mauser 98 custom in 6.5 Creedmoor. Small ring 98 Karibiner

2. Mexican 1936 Mauser custom in 7X57.

3. Mauser Oberndorf Gew98 custom in .270 Just reworked/slimmed down the custom stock for the second time, waiting on checkering. Heavy sporter barrel.

4. Mauser 1909 Argentine 98 in 7X57 custom made in the 1970's by my long gone friend in my home town. Minty safe queen. (1 test fire only)

5. Mauser 98 based true small ring double square bridge action made by Pete Grisel (R.I.P.) & stocked by Al Lind. .280 Remington.

6. Brno Model 22F commercial 98 Mauser in 7X57 currently in process for a new Recknagle safety, rust blue and stock.

7. Winchester pre-war Model 70 in .270 stocked by Al Lind. One of his personal rifles for many years. He couldn't recall who did the metal work. Thanks Al. I am proud of this rifle. My only blind magazine rifle.

*8. Modern Mauser M12 in .30-'06. Bone stock. A bit hefty but cycles like buttah. Very fast action. Accurate too.

*9. K1 Merkel in 7X57R. Sold my minty K95 in 7X57 rimless just prior. Didn't have heart to get that one wet. This one gets wet, bumped submerged in water and doesn't miss a beat. Soon time for another refresh on the stock. Finish is worn through again. Metal holding out nicely.

10. K3 Merkel Extreme in .30-'06 Saw the nice wood. Had to buy it. It will get used one of these years.

11. Special order Dakota Model 10 in 7X57. Barrel marked .275 Rigby. Stunning wood and fine craftsmanship. Got bored with this drop block action. Break actions like my Merkels are preferred. So, this one has been a safe queen.

12. Ruger 77 Mark II International - full stock in .308 Sits in the safe. Fired little, like new in box.

13. Modern CRF Winchester Model 70 Super Grade in .308. New in box, unfired. Assembled in Portugal. Excellent wood grain.

What's next Mike?

An awesome collection.

I have lost interest in killing stuff. Same time I am developing a greater and greater interest in instruments for killing stuff - rifles.

I have a few custom rifles but I have a different approach than nearly everyone on my custom rifles. I normally build semi custom rifles on factory left hand actions - cz, Ruger, Sako. I have done these with Wayne at AHR. I then hunt the rifles hard and beat them up. I then send them back to Wayne to have them built into full custom with nice wood and I mainly shoot them at the range.

I really like shooting my blaser r8 rifles but I prefer hunting with single shots.

I also like platform guns - blaser r8, k-95, sig p320, ect.

I don’t like to tinker and platform guns are normally well engineered so no need to tinker.

My goal is to get rid of most of my guns (and all my other stuff) over next 10 years. First step to getting rid of stuff is not buying stuff. On new guns I see more k-95 and maybe a F3.

I will try and upgrade my existing guns. New triggers on ar and cz rimfires. Red dots on pistols.

I need to sell a bunch of guns in the classified. I am just too lazy.

Worth noting that PPU make two batches of 8x57 ammo: 8x57 Mauser which is loaded at all of 2100 from memory and 8x57IS which is CIP spec 196 at 2500.
In Australia most ammo on the shelf is the “Mauser” spec

I think the ballistic specs quoted are for the IS round not the “Mauser” ammo for sale.
Have a look at https://www.prvipartizan.com/rifle_ammo.php and you’ll see what I mean. They list a 196 at 665m/s in the Mauser and at 750m/s in the IS.
Worth noting they do the same for the 7x57 by the looks

Order brass from Graffs or Midway, $59.00 per hundred, Bullets of your choice..easy as that..BTW PPU is as good as brass can get, I use lots of it..Components are easy and lots of choices for 8x57..I like the 160 gr. TTSX Barnes at about 2600 to 2700 plus FPS..depending on the rifle..I shoot a good mod.LR 98 Mauser and a SR Mauser Brno.

You’ll be lucky if the Mauser match ammo reaches 2150fps

Ive only used handloads in my 8x60..Ive been playing with the brno, glassed it, added a timney trigger, 1/2" recoil pad, and thinking about reboreing to 9.3x62 or 35 IMP Whelen, or even a .375X62, had one of those and really liked it..Will be an iron sighted gun for the black timber swamps if I can get a tag drawn..LIke I need another gun..

Alf,
A lot of PHs both in Namibia and RSA have 8x57 milsurp Mausers in their closets, and many have praised the gun to me based on its use. Im sure they were being honest btw...Some 30 years ago I saw hundreds of Mausers in varias Mauser calibers, but seemed to be mostly 8x57, along with some damn nice custom rifles like H&H etc that had been seized and stored and allowed to rust up..These sheds were in Mozambique..I don't know what ever happended to them..I attempte to purchase them, but to no avail..

The 8x57 is unquestionably capable of killing all North American big game. It's inherent accuracy seems to have gone unheralded. I do not own an 8x57. However, I have read that it's capable of outstanding accuracy. Accuracy breeds confidence. Confidence kills big game.

Well, the truth of the matter is that the 8 mm has most likely killed more men + animals than the 30-06 (I know, SACRILEGE!!)but it's true. So in all honesty, although it would not be my 1st pick; it is a very capable game cartridge.

The MG-42 insured that race was won. Likely anyway.

I like the 8x57 and 8x60 if for no other reason than its something different to play and hunt with, that has to add up to something positive..and Ive enjoyed both to no end..and they do kill and on paper they both out do the 30-06 in cross section of bullet, bullet weitht, and velocity with handloads, as a matter of fact..Am I saying they are better than the 30-06, not enough for me to sell my 06 which is my all time favorite caliber.....but give credit where crdit is due..
