I am contemplating getting a 7.62x 39 bolt action. I'm looking at the CZ 527 carbine but am open to any suggestion that makes sense. Who owns what and how do you like it? I am well satisfied with a CZ .222 that I have but wonder if the 7.62x39 carbine will be as good .I've shot the CZ, 527 varmint rifle in 17 cal. and was impressed with that also.

It would be a hoot if CZ offered a 6mm ppc varmint weight rifle with a good quality barrel.I punch a lot of paper now days but no longer in competition. Many in my generation especially in southern Cal. do the same but don,t want to get into the total bench rest game. A CZ 22, or 6mm ppc might obtain a modest following. Thanks folks roger

The 7.62x 39 is a fun round especially in a bolt action rifle. I have a Ruger MkII stainless synthetic in 7.62x39 that I bought in about 1992? or so as a special run for Davidsons. It shoots ok-about 1.5 moa at 100 yards with reloads or military ammo. I did replace the mainspring with a heavier one because I had occasional misfires with Yugo hard primer milsurp ammo-no misfires after replacement. Ruger made another run of these a couple of years ago too.

I would think the CZ would be an excellent rifle and would buy one if I didn't already have the Ruger. Bore/goove size on my Ruger is 'supposed' to be .300/.308 but I haven't slugged the bore. I reload .308 bullets for hunting but routinely shoot milsurp for plinking, practice, and etc. What is the bore/groove dimentions on the CZ? Good luck and have fun. Plateau Hunter

I have looked at one of those also. My reservations were that the bore is 311 instead of 308. Lack of loading flexibility.

One of the gunsmiths on line, I believe HondoJohn, was playing with those in a couple of calibers. All would be rebarrel jobs, jacking up the price. But a 6PPC or 22 PPC would be a nice rifle set up the way one would want it.

I was debating the same thing, except my choices were in the Rem BR series, 22, 6mm or 6.5 mm.

If you pursue this, keep me posted on how much you like it or not.

The .30 PPC (7.62x39-Improved?) is also an excellent Varmint-For-Score class benchrest target round. My experience with it in that mode suggests to me it would be a GREAT fox/coyote/small deer/javelina sporter round as well.



Could be a sweetheart of a custom little "walkin-around" rifle for the ne'er-do-well woods-loafer such as myself. If I had one of the little Rugers, I think I'd have it rechambered to the .30 PPC immediately, if not sooner...

Edited - Actually, I already have my own JGS .30 PPC reamer and gauges and a good lathe. With the 196 gr. Eagan MX4-30A bullet sized to .311" and either VV-N133 or N135 it will easily give the almost 200 gr. bullet 2,200 fps at 12' from the muzzle. And this little cartridge could easily be put in about a 6-pound gun with no recoil problems. Geez, I think maybe I've talked myself into another one....<G>
