Here's a couple of tables from a Finn Aagaard acticle. It may help fan the fires.

Old Sarge,
Maybe you are recoil sensitive and just don't know it yet!

Actually I suspect your experience has more to do with stock design than caliber...A .338 is a maidens kiss..

The 338 and the 375 operate at very near the same velocity with the 338 the slowest with the heavy bullets. In foot pounds it has less recoil...My 375 recoils much more than my 338, but neither is bad at all.....

Ray,

Maybe it is just stock design, but by pushing the same bullet 200-300 fps in the 338WM (compared to the 35 Whelen)the recoil must increase. Like Oldsarge I definately can feel the differnce between the two. Though I should change that recoil pad on the Ruger 77 in 338WM. Ruger might as well of glued a brick in its place for the softness of it. Try the 225 grain Barnes X in your 35 Whelen rifle and it will penetrate extremely well. Last time I was plain game hunting in Namibia I took both rifles. Became so confident with the 35 Whelen, I never took the 338WM out of the case. Up to 300 yards, there is no practical difference in my opinion. Comparing the 338-06 to the 35 Whelen, the only differnce is 0.020". Just depends on the the one you like.

Lou270, For quite awhile my neighbor and good hunting buddy Kile had a 338-06, and at the time I had a 35whln, a 700 when they had come out. We got to shoot side by side with ours on moose and black bears. Ill be damned if I could see any diff on game. Sometimes the 338-06 was ahead on penetration, sometimes not. Id rather have a 35 over the 338-06, anymore I use a 375 over the both and no longer have my 35.

With bullets of similar construction I don't think anyone would see any tangible difference. I don't pay attention to "paper ballisitcs" that much though either. Fun stuff to banter about on the forums when your bored but in the real world most of us know what works and what doesn't.

A 250 grain bullet out of EITHER cartridge WILL work if placed properly. end of discussion.

One of the arguments that I see when comparing the .338-06 w/ the .35 Whelen is that the 250 grain bullet of the .338-06 has higher sectional density and will penetrate better than the .35W. Theoretically, this makes sense, but out of curiosity, have any of you ever had penetration problems with a good 250 grain bullet in the .35 Whelen (i.e. is the advantage in the realm of theory)?

Thanks,

Lou

No they penetrate almost (I did say almost... right?) the same. The 338 does edge it. But so the heck what? With all these wonderful premium bullets out there who cares about sufficient penetration anymore. Load up a 200 or 210 Barnes X at max speed in either, and you are det up for almost any game in the world!
