.25-06 Barrel Questions

I am getting ready to send my .30-06 rifle off to be rebarreled to a .25-06. I plan on using 110 - 120 grain bullets, and I was wondering if anyone had input on the following questions:

1) What barrel length would you recommend? I was planning on going with a 23" or 24" barrel.

2) What twist would you recommend?

3) There are options for 3,4,5 or 6 groove barrels. Not really sure what that means. Which would be the best of these?

Thanks for your help!

Fine....I like 22" but those lengths are good too.

1 in 10"

if you have a four headed coin flip it....I'm not sure there's a tinker's damn bit of differece at all.

The .25-06 is a marvelous combo gun for deer, pronghorns and varmints.....have a ball.

Being an "overbore" cartridge, the 25-06 needs at least a 24" tube to develop good velocity IMHO. Your mileage may vary.

Glen, can you explain about how much velocity loss a .25-06 will have with a 22" compared to a 24" barrel?

1) Given the 25-06's expansion ratio I'd go with a 24" unless you're trying to make an ultralight, in which case I'd go 22.5" or 23".
You'd be giving up a bit of velocity and gaining abit of muzzle blast, but not enough to make a difference in the field.

2) 1-10"

3) 3 groove allegedly wear better, though I judge by your statement of 110-120 grain bullets that this will be a deer/antelop rifle, and not a varmint rifle. Thus, I suspect this is not going to make much of a difference for you in a hunting rifle.
